High-Velocity vs. Same Industry

Our team keeps flopping between their pre-reqs for hiring SDR's and AE's. The one mindset is to hire "hustlers." People who can be trained and have a track record of being in high velocity companies (i.e. finance, logistics) and the other mindset is to find people who have been in the same industry as us for many years and tend to be more stuck in their ways. Which would you prefer on your team and why?

You can train someone to sound like an expert in the industry. IMO work-ethic is more valuable.

I'd look for someone who is flexible, has a bigger world view and work to keep them. But again if you're looking for someone to come in and ruffle things up, rehash your playbook, bring some tribal knowledge, the second type for sure.

Hustler. I think that training someone on. a new product is easier than changing a person's whole mindset, motivation, or way of working.

Definitely hustler. If the goal is growth then why would you want to limit yourself to the mindset and habits of those in your industry? Bringing in fresh perspectives and ideas from outside your industry may help to discover new opportunities for your organization.

Hustlers for SDRs 100% -> it's all about daily activities.
AE's? Depends on the complexity of the sale, nuance of the product, and industry. If you already have relationships with key players across the space, why would you not hire them? If someone is genuinely curious & can replace their industry expertise with a growth mindset, grit, and determination, I'd take that person over a lazy industry expert any day of the week.

I've shamefully done so off of a very misguided 600 person blast. Had exactly ONE meeting.
