Honest Question - community vs competition - Does it really benefit us to have forums like this when we are all competing for the same jobs

Hello fellow sales savages,

I've been in the game for about 8 years and get along great with my fellow sales guys and gals and everything in between. I've been fortunate to work at some great companies and also some shitty ones.

I've always found there is some level of competition within my teams. Because while most people want to have success while also seeing others have success, at the end of the day, in most sales organizations, especially if most of the team is not hitting their numbers, we are all competing for our jobs based on being compared to other members of the team.

I am actively looking for my next role, and I can't help but think of this when I am competing with all of you for a good opportunity. I believe in the law of abundance and all that, that there's plenty of jobs out there for everybody, eventually....but then, if we're on here posting jobs to each other, aren't we shooting ourselves in the foot?

Maybe I'm cynical but just wanted to open up the floor here.

Cheers and good luck out there to all fellow job seekers in a crazy market.

It’s doubtful that I’d ever go head to head with more than a handful of members for a job. We are all geo, industry, skill set, and experience diverse.

Yup. That's why the anon forum works. We gave no details, and truly are hereto help.

We aren't posting jobs to each other. That's not really what this forum is for.

Exception: those who come here and don't know better, and the "hiring" series of posts from our own community manager.

I can guarantee that YOU are not competing for the same jobs I would apply for. Don't get me wrong, I am sure you're competent, etc. but the odds of us competing for a similar job - when you take into account work history, performance, geography, etc. -is very very very small.

So in that light, of course I'd help you out.

Strongly disagree with this forum being a threat to any selfish needs.

Not judging selfish needs.

This forum still probably only holds a small percentage of the smattering of applicants to XYZ.

The lurkers are an even smaller percentage.

True contributors likely have a different path with relevant insight to gain.

Salute your brothers and sisters in arms.

I’d focus more on the value this forum can give you in your next step rather than holding it back.

It's not like that exactly here, besides most of us are on a way different sales fields than others besides that not all of us are in the US.
Offering help is never bad and even that support just comes from a simple search on the hiring portals that could be located easily by the job seekers themselves directly.
Finally the WR manager is having some frequent updates on the who's hiring that makes that task now super easy to handle!

My thought is that everyone here is looking to bounce ideas and learn from interesting salespeople as opposed to spending time with my "competition"

I've always felt that this forum is primarily used to educate individuals already in or interested in the sales profession. That education can be key learnings, industry trends/insights, or personal testimonials of positive (or negative) experiences. I wouldn't view it as a competitive fight club where everyone is up against everyone. Sales is a massive market that touches every single vertical and there are a ton of career paths that you can pursue. I know someone who sold oil and gas instruments and now he's slanging IT infrastructure. I know an AE that's now running a tech company's marketing efforts. I know an SDR that started his own consulting company. Simply put, there is absolutely nothing to gain from worrying about the actions of others. It's not me against them... it's me against me.

There's a pretty wide swath of people on here. Different industries, different experience levels, different locations. I don't know that we're all going head to head.

Competition is the fire that drives sales. If no one wanted your job, or client, you would be half as effective at reaching your quota.

Unlikely that we compete for the same title, but if so I dont sweat it as more value comes from talking strategy then the off chance we use the same advice against each other for a job or on a deal

Has massive growth ever led to mental breakdown? I have been hustling since 17 years old chasing to strive for success doing odd jobs and unintentionally ended up with Edtech K12 Sales as my first official sales job - A toxic culture with no employee respect eventually me to switch after 18 months. Since reps in Edtech are highly valued, had no option but to continue in Edtech sales. This time it was higher education segment, things looked good in the first few month but slowly it started adapting methodologies like the old Edtech since the management was changed. I decided to move out and switch to B2B SaaS. After 13 months of learning & success, my aspirations weren’t matching with the growth vision shared by my manager and ended up being desperate to switch. Got to a AM-Inside Sales role with a 50% hike. Guess what? It led to my mental break down since the culture is pathetic. In entire journey, all challenges never affected my performance but l am losing the spark to glow and hustle eventually. While I plan to switch, a token of guilt is still alive. The experiences have made me far better and strong as a BDR but blank about the next steps in my career. Thanks for reading. Do share your thoughts.
