Hours after raising $500 million, AI startup Cohere told staff it was laying off about 20 employees

employee post on LinkedIn:ย
We just raised $500mm ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

1 hour later:ย

๐Ÿ˜ฃ should startups layoff (cut fat) before or after the raise?ย

Typically done before to lighten books. Also happens pre-IPO a lot to avoid the whale early equity holders.

Can someone explain how they can be hiring and laying off simutaneously. Silly questionโ€ฆ or did they layoff only certain specific other roles, not sales.

The hiring manager who posted the job prob got laid off and they havenโ€™t bothered to take it down lmao. They just dumped half a goddamn billion in the business account, got bigger fish to fry then worry about us assholes

Honestly expect shenanigans in early stage start ups, and that goes double for AI.

1000% agree. Specifically with this one there has been a fuckin race in Canada for the landmark rounds that are being raised. Clio (a Canadian legaltech) just raised fucking $900m USD at a $3b USD valuation.

Because there are so few massive raises like this in Canada, expect even more volatility especially with RIFs in the sales force

They dry their tears with their new options and stacks of hundredsโ€ฆnot realizing the options arenโ€™t worth the paper theyโ€™re printed on.

Do they have no decency?!? Everyone knows you raise money, hire employees, then fire them in month 11 so they don't get any of their bonuses or equity. What kind of ametuers are running that shit heap?

Just went through this myselfโ€ฆ. Was made a bunch of promises only to be laid off at the 11th hour before I could cash in.

It sucks but sometimes itโ€™s the investor requirement to assess the workforce and lay off the over hired number.

Layoffs suck, but that's wild to do a layoff right after a 500 million dollar capital raise?

"Bloomberg reports that Cohere plans to double its 250-employee headcount this year."

Is this double the number before the layoffs or after!?
