One time the homeowner I was working with had a predetermined, set budget based on the type of loan she had via her mortgage. Tons of paperwork is needed from me to substantiate the work and what not, so we dont do this in a blind bid process. She refused to share anything and was just "give me the best price" so, considering I didnt even know the scope, to say it was a blind bid is an understatement. 

Well, at the end, she asked if I would match the price of the disaster recovery loan + insurance coverage, and I said "well, that depends. Are they more than me? Because then sure I will match it. Are they less than me? Because then no, I wont...." 

I have better, but I just did that the other day so it is fresh in my mind

Was it really down to price? So many times when people say they just chose the cheaper provider, there are myriad other factors at play and that’s just the easiest one that doesn’t hurt anybody’s feelings for them to suggest.
