How did you end up in Sales?

Hi everyone,

I'm curious to know how did you end up in Sales!

Was it your first job out of college/wherever your studies? Did you work in any other department before?

Cheers,

Was an infantry officer in the Marines for 7 years out of college.  My last assignment before getting out was as a recruiter.  Got the sales bug during that gig.  Went into banking for a bit but still had the itch to get back into sales.  Ended up in SaaS and I'm here to stay!

What a great story!

It's crazy you got to experience so many different things. Glad you found a place you want to stay! #XaaS

I started at one of the big 4 in a finance role, but I quickly switched to selling cloud computing. Very different experiences but happy enough with the decision.

Went to college for Pastoral Studies, left the church and went on a tear.

Five years later I got approached with a good sales gig and built upon it from there.

10 years after that - here we are.

I started by selling lemons to kids in my neighborhood that had lemonade stands. That led me to selling fake homework passes in 8th grade (business was so good that I got suspended for that one), then I sold pot all through college, and eventually landed in software sales. Any time there was a demand for something and I could figure out a way to capitalize on it, I was all over it.

Started out in a Customer service role right out of school. Was given a script, auto dialer and basically called people to update them about insurance changes. People were real asses.

After that, a buddy worked in sales, referred me and its been slanging tech since.

Not a lot of value in my response but that was a fun trip down memory lane

Awesome!

I'm biased because I love tech but thanks for sharing:)

This may be a weird thread, but I love hearing this stuff (chilling a lot during this pandemic).

Sales chose me, some people never had a chance for anything else. This was always my path. You?

I went from a job where I had a good salary, good benefits, and as long as my team didn't bomb on something I wouldn't get fired. I realized I was too comfortable. I wanted to do more and get paid for what I do. AND here we are.

When it was time to get my first job I sat down and wrote a list: unlimited earning potential, travelling, fun, not an admin job, not anything with hardcore maths.

Haven't found anything else matching that list for jobs.

I wanted to be a literature professor. Got into a graduate program and was on my way and then I got a glimpse into my professors personal lives. A lot of depression and anxiety, feelings of low self-worth. Drinking problems were not uncommon. Even the most reputable scholars in the department seemed to hate what they did. I figured, if I'm going to feel this way, I might as well be well paid.

Jokes aside, I used to think my time in that program was a huge waste of time, but learning how to read good literature analytically has been a huge asset in sales. Reading good literature is a great way to become a sophisticated communicator and learn how to read people.
