"How did you get my contact info?"

Prospect is calling you out for cold calling. Uh-oh. What do you do?

What's your approach to navigate this?

I used to go with this:

"We have a team who helps me identify the people who would most benefit from our services due to X, Y, Z"

Turn an objection into an opportunity to pitch.

I have always found that honesty is the best policy here - even if I got transferred to HR on purpose and pretended I was lost. I called that approach the bumbling detective.

I can go both ways really depending on the tone of the prospect over the call.

I sometimes say bad new [name] you are forever in our thoughts...the only way is to listen to me so I can highlight you out of the db and prevent my colleagues from calling you.

I got positive returns on this haha.

Keep it real. And if that person gives you a hard time, tell them you found their contact info the same way their company finds customers to sell to...

Honestly, that sounds like a good way to ensure the gate keeper black balls you. The worst thing you can do when being accused of unsavoury business practices (from the prospect's perspective) is turn it back on them and be like "Well guess what, your company does that same thing, you piece of shit!"

Obviously, I'm exaggerating here but still...

Haha, yes - and while I am joking about saying that - there's certainly clever ways to challenge the prospect. If you're in an enterprise sales cycle, there will be many people you will have to win over, and if you're demonstrating business value then pissing off one person won't matter in the end. To be honest, if someone is pushing back on you cold calling them then you either didn't position value properly, or they are simply the wrong person to be talking to. My suggestion would be to move on to the next person with a relevant title (if you're truly cold calling).ย
