How do I get marketing to stop sending emails on my behalf?

So I recently started at a new company.

The marketing team has wasted no time in using my (and the other AEs) email to blast out these prospecting messages to every single person that's ever stepped foot on this earth. You know the kind. Generic, templated, buzzword-filled, gimmicky marketing emails.

My VP of Sales isn't really involved with this process at all, but he isn't stopping it. Being the new guy at the company, how would you advise I approach this situation?

I don't want my email to end up on every blacklist the internet has to offer.

Export data into a spreadsheet for your use. Then delete every contact's email in your CRM that you don't want that blast crap going out to.

Sounds like a good way to get fired!

Have you asked them to stop or asked your boss for help?

Worst case just mark them all "unsubscribe" in CRM.

I have, but he didn't seem too interested. He just has so many other priorities

Did you explain it'll effect his number if your legit outreach is getting blocked? That should get any decent sales VPs attention.

yep - we have a check box at the account level and contact level in our CRM for "opt-out"

Just tell them. It’s your name they are using!

Cross that silo and talk to the team, they think they're helping but we all know Marketing lives the spray&pray approach.

Have you tried screaming at marketing?

I want to! just being cautiou thoughs. I don't want to be the new guy that immediately comes in and says their whole process is terrible and we need to change it

I was half-kidding about the screaming. I would just ping them and say "hey, this has caused massive problems for me historically. Can you not do this for leads in my name?"

How big is your company? As someone in a similar situation at a large company, I can tell you it likely isn’t worth fighting over unless you are at a smaller org where you may have a chance of influencing the marketing team’s strategy.

Fairly small Saas company so I think I could influence some people. Just don't know if it's worth doing yet since I'm so new

Make them as “do not put in marketing campaign” in your crm. There is usually a field for that.
