1. Be an ex-frat guy 2. Be full of BS and love the sound of your own voice 3. Know the right person to buy that BS.

Thankfully it is slowly dying down in SaaS, the ex-frat guy stuff at least. I have been lucky to avoid it at major corps I have been a part of.

This right here! I think the problem is people forget to grow when they get that promotion.

Failing up is one of those conundrums which have baffled the wise and the capable since the beginning of time.

Even more true at startups where competency does not matter.

being in the right place at the right time can really help those ppl.

i was in an org where the VP of sales, director and sales and sales managers all quit.

the senior AE was made VP OF SALES! like WTF!!!

That is just scary to think of, I have known some AEs who would be scary toxic as leaders.

RIGHT? in this example, he ended up doing a fairly solid job. which is really impressive. but you can for sure tell that he had never done this before and kinda had no idea what he was doing hah

because the skillset to GET a job is a different skillset to DO a job. Failing upward is VERY easy. They're not incompetent, they're good at what they do, which isn't their job.

Agree. You get where you spend your focus and energy- but then problem is you have optimised to for pitching not for execution and delivery. All for what? Because doing a “good job” is never enough to be noticed

Incompetent people get into leadership because the competent people don’t event apply😂.

But seriously why should one get into leadership?
1.)Being the manager you get less authentic feedback from field than you want.
2.) Your ego becomes even bigger enemy slowing your own growth.
3.) Unless you are bootstrap founder - in leadership, role you are never in state of freedom to have it your way and do things that have never been done.
4.) To be part of the club of cool guys , you inflate your lifestyle too (a path that has no U-turn)
5.) Yes you get to see perspectives that are only seen from top of the mountain (board? Leadership team?) but when you are at the top there is very less oxygen 😅 so you spend your energy thinking survival with no motive to serve others (unless there is tax break for the cause)

So for what?
Because there is no way to increase your income and status unless you look for the promotion to that mgr path. The corporate growth is easily defined and visible in hierarchical growth.

If you give me some more ways to double the income and status while staying IC - I will not climb that stupid corporate ladder to fail as a manager.

And the only such role is being in sales - so we are grateful (at least for now)

Happens more times than not… Success in sales and success in leadership are very different skill sets. Most do not get that FACT.

You know what, I always thought that the skill and providing business value is the most important. However, I would say that as an employee, your goal is to make your superiors happy and make them think of you as someone who can do stuff. Being smart and cunning definitely will help you throughout your career.

Make friends with the owner of the company and wear very high heels. To me ridiculous a whole fleet of excellent sales professionals made an Exodus after that
