How Do People Balance Competition With Teamwork

In sales it seems important to have a balance of (friendly) competition and teamwork. How have people balanced this at their organization so your SDRs are working and competing with each other to their benefit? It seems to be a fine line between having your SDRs compete amongst themselves without pushing anyone to burn out, but at the same time making sure people help each other and give their co-workers the resources they need to succeed.

its called referrals. Happy customers help close the next deal.ย 

If a colleague has a happy client in a similar industry, I'll absolutely ask for a referral and vice versa. Get the reputation of being the best office/company ever.ย 

No idea if this translates to SDRs, though.ย

I think it can. If you sell to someone and they have an amazing experience they are much more likely to refer that SDR,

Keeping the competition friendly is key. Sales contests and some good natured ribbing can go far to bring the team together in achieving their goals. But the team also needs to celebrate each other's successes. If anyone is caught poaching deals or otherwise sabotaging someone else's success it needs to be dealt with swiftly and harshly.ย 

Management needs to treat everyone fairly and not talk down to a rep just because they're not doing so well that week. They also can't treat high performers like they're above the rules.
