How do you deal with a client or prospect who wants to discuss politics?

In this day and age, everyone has an opinion on current events AND it is extremely divisive. I’d love to hear any successful approaches you’ve had to redirect these conversations.

Feel them out and stay general with your comments. Most of the time you can tell which way they lean pretty quickly with non-verbals and remarks they make when topics are brought up.

But to be honest, I agree with whatever they say! Whether they’re a Republican or a Democrat, their money is still green and it’s your job to move it from their pocket to yours. Plus, people are much more likely to give their money to someone who’s on their side!

Definitely agree with this. I tend to feel them and see if I can even approach the discussion. I normally stay with general answers, but there are times i've fed into the "you're absolutely right" even if I dont agree just to get their sale. 9/10 times though, I change the topic usually shrug it away with "Thats whole other story, lets save that for after work hours"

Yep, 100% agreed. Agree with the prospect, lend a line or two you know will resonate with them and politely move on. Why anyone would debate or disagree with a prospect on something like politics is beyond me...not the time or place if you want to make money.

Yeah I think most prospects respect it when you want to keep it about their business, but a couple of sympathetic "I knows" and sighs always help put you both on the same team.

you don't. there's no such thing as a one-person buying group and EVERYONE has their own opinions.

Personally I stop to listen to them, stay neutral, then somehow tie it back to the meeting at hand. Most of them just want to be heard.

Shake your head and knod, and look for opportunities to pivot the conversation wherever possible.

I'd probably share my political leanings and, for good measure, discuss religion, local sports teams and a few other socially unacceptable opinions.  After that I'd slide the contract across the table and say "press hard, three copies".
