How do you manage new inbound requests when on vacation?

If you take time off for let's say a week and get assigned a demo request - what do you do? I get quite a few demo requests but most are bad quality. I find it's always annoying to keep up with it when on vacation and also can be hard to explain to some people you're only free in a week.

do any of you have any strategies to handle this or general advice?

Generally, it’s passed on to the rest of the team, when you’re not there - you’re not getting any inbounds assigned to your name. Things tend to become more complicated when it’s coming from an account that you’re working on (then it’s always yours). Oftentimes A team lead / manager will then pick this up and schedule something for you.

I guess the problem is no one wants to give up a lead from their territory. I am fortunate to work for a company with lots of inbound leads so it’s not impossible that a killer company with a great use case will come in and I’d hate to miss that opportunity. Do you know if people ever pass on the initial communication to a colleague then take back over when they’re back?

I’ve seen deals being given back at a later stage, yes. Or we split commission on those type of deals. Must say that those times were at a pretty early stage with a small team where everyone was pretty close.

At my company you don't get assigned work when you're on vacation...people need time to decompress and not think about work. If a lead that you own comes in, your manager will take care of it until you're away. This is an ideal process imo

If there is anyone else in the office who has the expertise to handle the demo I’d point them in their direction, this could also be the perfect time to delegate some responsibilities to a colleague who is doing a great job and trying to move in the company, you can train him/her right before the trip and jump to the first demo and see how he/she does.

If no one else is qualified and they is no rising star, I’d ask the reps to either not schedule appointments during that week unless they are Uber qualified and have immediate need.

I give my inside rep/BDR access to my inbox and put a backup on the OOO. Take the time off. Sales is a grind. Also, be the first to offer this teammate of the year service to your peers so you can ask for it later.Β

I rarely have any inbound leads. When I do, I schedule them when i come back.

Pass it on to someone else on the team especially if they're garbage and if the sales cycle is short the prospect probably would have been pretty deep in convo with competitors by the time you get to speak with them for the first time.Β

I have to put OOO mode on Salesforce and the leads pass to someone else

I’m bring my English culture into vacation time. Emails off, voicemail set up letting them know I’m on vacation, and if it’s an important customer, I text them letting them know I’m vacation and they typically are fine with it. Auto email is set up so that they can get a hold of the office worst case but look after yourself and enjoy the time off while you have it. America doesn’t give enough time off so enjoy it!
