How do you respond to something like this?

Reached out to ask why they had not followed up and booked a meeting for next steps, he responds Covid is bad in india where some of his employees are I say "So sorry, I hope things get better, talk when you can." he responds "One of our employee died along with his parents. Three more are in critical condition."

I appreciate the relationship I have built where he can be this honest, but at the same time, how do I respond? I genuinely feel for him and do not really want to leave him on read but... jesus.

Tell him you are sorry to hear that and you understand where he is coming from. Wish him well and tell him you will be there when he is ready for a discussion

You tell him let's totally shelf the business stuff for now when people are literally dying around you and if he needs to talk human to human you're available. Drop this person in your mind as a buyer and just go into human to human mode

Agree with the others here- empathize. This person is not buying from you right now. Maintain the relationship and say something like how sorry you are to hear that and that if there is anything that you can help with for that person not to hesitate to reach out.

Keep it short and sweet and wish them well. Tell them that you will be there to help them with X anytime in the future.
