Two examples….

  1. Found out on a Tuesday afternoon that my customer was meeting with the competition Thursday. Wednesday morning I was on a cross country flight to have dinner with them. Flew back Thursday morning deal in hand.
  2. Spent 6 weeks in another state tightening up operations in one of our locations. Earned 5x business after.

That’s exactly how you do it. You have to get the deals in yourself, you can’t sit back and wait.
When I was a young ppc salesman our agency had a roughly 3-4 week turn around from contract go going live. I learned how to do every part of the build process so I could get the accounts up in one day. I sold countless accounts who needed an immediate “on” by doing it myself. I’d say, “if you can sign today I can have your account on in the morning.” It produced a lot of deals. I’d go home, sit at my computer & churn them out. It was what set me apart.
Way to go, that’s how you do it and congrats on the deal!

Bingo. When I was told “only way you’re getting this deal is if YOU personally fix the issues”. I said I’ll be there Monday. 6 weeks later, there was no question how committed we were. 

I’m sure you earned a ton of points with the rest of the team too. You know they can get it done because you’ve done it before.

Got a call Friday night at 7:30 of Memorial day weekend a few years back that a customers entire trailer of equipment was stolen and needing equipment on jobsite Tuesday morning.  Had him send his list Friday night, I put the order together and went to the office Saturday morning and picked it, boxed it and drove it to UPS for an overnight shipment to arrive on Tuesday morning.  All in all it was over 700lbs worth of equipment with a hefty surcharge for overnight shipments but they were working again Tuesday morning.  Customer is still working with us and won't go anywhere else now.

Started my career in D2D sales. Sold home TV/Internet + Cell Phones. Broke all the records, won all the prizes, took home all the money.

I used to sell old people cell phones, then come back to their place and set them up/show them how it worked. Crash course on iPhone/Android, etc.

One lady negotiated with me super hard. Had to come back to her house 3x. She bought 2 cable packages and 5 cellphones, and the last night I came back she made me a steak dinner.

My secret weapon: some people used to be super stubborn about letting me into the house and buying from me. So I’d offer to call the cowards’ existing cable company, pretending to be them, and get them a better deal on their existing provider, no obligations. It would build so much trust so that they’d actually switch, even after they got a better deal because of me.

Mine are mostly technical. Like the very large ecommerce company that demanded a POC in their production site checkout. Soooooo, basically a full implementation. Great. That was a shit show, because their site was built on legacy custom code and we had to work with their Sapient contractors - which was kind of a nightmare. By the end of that cycle four months later, I had basically ground my teeth into knobs and had to take a long weekend in the mountains to breathe again. 

I have done a couple day trips out to CA from IAD in my time, but none of them were for the deal close and I didn't mind it as much.

I love it. There is a company I was looking to sign up a company that just had the CEO replaced and is in the middle of a shake-up. I live in a city and don't have a car. I took a train to the closest station and then an Uber to get to the CEO's favorite restaurant to grab dinner with him. There was a board approval needed, but I was able to get a letter of intent from him that night and was able to leverage that into signing the contract, and options for a 5-year deal. 

Nothing really replaces being there and talking face to face, except conferences, those relly don't lead to getting deals sone and tend to be a couple of days off.
