How late do you stay at the office?

It's unspoken, but my employer expects people to be available until 6-6:30p (sometimes later) but available means AT the office. Higher-ups don't arrive until 10-11am, but I'm here by 8:30 every day and I'm always the first one in.

I am the only person at my company with young kids, and during the school year we have commitments almost every night of the week. This is becoming an issue for my leadership team, as they expect 60-70hrs/wk out of employees and after hours availability for internal meetings.

I've gotten my/my kids schedules worked out to where I can stay late M/Th & some Fridays, but the other days it is impossible. This schedule change was achieved by me quitting a work-out class that I loved but the timing of classes didn't work.

Today this has become an issue because I have someplace to be at 5:30 on a Friday.

Do I just get over it and accept that I'll be a constant disappointment because they don't see that I'm the first here every day even if I'm also the first to leave Tu/Wed/Fri? Any other advice here? I'm so lost on how to deal with this because literally not a single person in my company can relate to what it's like juggling kids schedules.

You have a manager title. What are you scared of?

Regardless, stand up for yourself and set your boundaries. Fuck what they think. There's no written policy.

It’s only a title, I’m not in an actual management role. Was created that way to give the impression I’m not an entry level re when calling on prospects.

Yeah- you’re definitely right. I’m no good at setting boundaries and need to get better at that. Should I start putting my after hours commitments on my work calendar?

No. It's after hours. This shouldn't have to be explained.

So do you need help freshening up your resume, or what?

I am available 8:30-5:30pm. If I choose to keep working after that then I turn off notifications and quit slack until the next day. Unless you are to pay me for two full time salaries then you're getting one full-time level of effort.

Ha! Great response. I have made the commitment to stick out my PIP here (Ive gone through a few usernames, but my PIP journey is still on my profile) so I can hopefully capitalize on all the work I’ve been putting in. Ive built a really awesome referral network, closed several deals recently and my funnel is growing every day. If they fire me, they sure as hell won’t be able to talk shit and I’ll be able to feel good about how I left it.

This sounds really fucked, was that a typo or they expect you to be there from 6AM to 630PM?

If so I hope you are making great money because I assure you that you can find a role working remotely 40 hours a week remotely where everything you just outlined is a non issue.

I work remotely and work from like 7 to 330-4pom every day but have quite a bit of control over my schedule.

No, sorry. 6:00pm +/- 30m. Not expected to be in office at any certain time, but my drop-off schedule gets me there around 8:30.

Gotcha. Idk you only have 1 chance to raise your family and spend time with your kids (at least I hope lol) and there are a lot of jobs out there, especially in this market. I would say fuck what they think and if they have a problem with that then go find a company that will support your schedule better.

That is how I've always felt! It shouldn't matter when or how I get to quota, it should just matter that I do. As long as it's not in a way that could come back to bite the business, of course. But I mean whether it's cold calls or networking events, or just getting friends to buy. Whatever pays the bills, pays the fucking bills... ya know?

Well, I think we are saying a few different things. Do I think you need to put in the full allotment of work and crush your expectations, follow your companies proven processes for success - 100% , but you don’t owe anyone more time than is outlined in your employee agreement, in fact them “retaliating” at those employees who aren’t putting in extra time is most likely borderline illegal.

for sure, I think we're saying the same thing just in different ways. The issue is, my company is so new that there isn't a 'proven process for success' yet and that's what makes this difficult. The owner thinks that their "process" (Adderall fueled late nights, no family, and an addiction to work) is the only way to succeed.

Which could be the case. If so, I'll never be successful because I'll never prioritize work over my family. I'm new enough that I'm still trying to figure out if that's the only way, or if I can successfully challenge that.

I leave as early as I can. if im done with my duties that day at 12pm i'd be gone before people come back from lunch. I'm doing my job, and reach my targets. but i ain't no corporate bitch. I know some places can have a toxic environment that if you don't stay longer at work, people look at you weird. fuck those mofos.
I have a life to live outside this capitalist world

Lol, you and I sound a lot alike. The only issue being that currently I'm on a plan. It's not that I'm not doing my job- more like it's impossible to succeed with the current set-up in place. I'm giving it my all because if I can find my way into success somehow, the money is great and worth putting up with all the BS. Hoping I don't regret this later though and look back like 'damn I wish I would have cut my losses and bounced'. Ya know?

Fight for yourself because it's only affecting you and not the sorrounding so start caring shit for what someone thinks about you, see you as..

I book a time with my manager where we discuss everything except work and work-life balance is one of the topics. Start doing it if possible.

That is great, and it sounds like your manager is awesome for being willing to do that also. I've always struggled with setting boundaries with those who are in a position of power over me, sounds like I need to learn how to do that a little better.

When in the office - I'm leaving around 5:30/6pm but working at home it's usually 7/8pm when i finish work.

Unless you can see a big difference in how others are treated by staying later etc, I wouldn't think too much. BUT equally, if you do see that, go to the boss's and explain the scenario - I'm sure they'd understand.

There is definitely a difference, but I'm not sure if it's because of how late others are available or if it's just that I don't really fit in here. I lean toward the latter but honestly never really thought of it in this way.

There's no point in being in the office if you've already done what you need to do.

You're don't supposed to work your ass off like a donkey, do what you need to do, and leave, no point in staying just to show you're hard-working or because you're worried what others might think.

At the end of the day, it's your results and numbers that do the talking for you.

I'm "available" well outside my working and/or in office hours.

Yes, my calendar is only open to being scheduled on from 8am-6pm, but I typically am working from 7am-6pm. We also have some international clients/prospects and I'll take meetings as early as 5am if it means revenue.

But, when I have other shit going on (appts, events, travel, personal reasons, family, etc.) I'm free to do as I please. Get your job done, and you wont be bothered culture.

Stand up for yourself and set boundaries. Make them understand you have a life outside work, and need to take care of your family. If there is something that needs to be done that day, you get it done after you pick them up. If they don't understand this, it might be time to evaluate your employer.
