How long is too long in terms of being an SDR?

I'm coming up on my 2-year mark, transitioning from Outbound to Inbound to Enterprise SDR. The timeline I've been given to move into an AE role is "based on company need" and is listed as an H2 timeframe. Even though the burnout is real, I continue to hit my numbers every month.

The average is 18 months from SDR to AE (if that is the path you want to pursue). By then, you're either too burnt out or you realize the company is BSing you around and you'll look at AE elsewhere. Just because you still hit your numbers doesn't mean you enjoy or is satisfied with what you're doing.

"Based on company need" can be 5 years, who knows. I would speak with them to get a clearer timeline/expectation before looking elsewhere.

"Based on company need" is short for you will never get promoted here.

I just hit the 2 year mark, and I just feel bored in my role. If there isn't any movement anytime soon I'm gonna need to start searching

I started searching at 15/16 months in and finally landed a few 19 months in. It’s hard going from BDR -> AE externally

Took me just over two years from joining my first SaaS company as an SDR to starting at a new company as an AE. Before that I worked at an outsourced lead gen agency and worked my way up to a full BDM bringing in business for the agency in a similar timeframe. Took the step back to SDR to join a software company directly.
