How long should you wait until you take time off at a new job?

The first few months of a new role is typically just learning the product and ramping. The first few months of full quota are crucial to determine your success.

So what is the appropriate amount of time to wait before you can use your PTO? And why?

If you're wanting to take an extra day off to extend your holiday weekend then do it if you have it available. Anything longer I'd say make sure you are out of your 90 day probation period.

If it's a day or two I think after three months it's fine.

A week +, at least six months.

Exceptions being for a pre-planned major event like a wedding or international vacation you booked before you started the job, those should be brought up at the time of offer and agreed upon ahead of time.

I don’t even know anymore 🤪
Know yourself. I wish I wasn’t so afraid to use it at the beginning, I missed a lot of important time with my family for a job. Now I don’t run from it, but I make SURE before I do I come in with a list of things I’ve already done to make up for the time I’m off.

To answer more directly, I don’t think there is a time frame if you come in prepared.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I always try to have my "hey, I'm traveling on X" dates ready before I start so the company has a heads up. If they have an issue, that's a red flag.
