I've been wanting to learn ASL! Not sure it counts for what we do or "speaking" a language - but it's certainly useful!

Depends on what your career and personal aspirations are in terms of languages. 1st thing I would say, is no language is too small to learn. It will engage your mind and open up, literally, a whole new world for you. The language that you enjoy learning and actually learn, is the one to go for. Case in point... I spent 6 years learning French vs 2 years of Spanish. Loved Spain and Spanish culture so that process was easy and I learned a ton vs French just annoyed me for some reason...

Personally I speak:
4 and a little of 2 more. I speak English, Spanish, Italian, and German fluently. Conversational level of French and Dutch :)

I guess working in the language services industry is a good fit!

I have a Sapphire badge on Duolingo, would that count as a proficient second language?

As long as you have a decent English will be enough to communicate with mot of the people so make sure you start polishing it, after that Chinese might be good since china is getting a big grow on the market world but I don't think is a must

you are right!

Mandarin would also be a good option but I still haven't decided.

I speak Mandarin (business proficiency) and English. After college since I had a technical degree this smaller company made me their Asia-Pacific Sales Manager after I closed a couple of deals in China. Definitely would learn mandarin and I've had many friends pick it up quick. You'll also be able to talk with more than half the world.

“Continue to work on your French, there are plenty of tech companies based in Paris!”

Is that close? Semi-close?

also, when DM’s become a thing, I wanna bend your ear / converse in French and learn from you. Clearly you know more French then me and i hate to sound like a hippie, but the vibes are awesome with your comments haha.

j’ai étudiez a mon lycée pour quatre ans, et j’écoute a Black M, Maître Gims, Stromae, etc alors je sais plus de la langue. C’est comme ci comme ça.

Regarding recommendations it would never hurt to know mandarin or Hindi, but it really depends on your markets. If you're in international work and know Spanish the likelihood of working in areas where Portuguese is helpful goes up.

I'm jealous, despite significant effort at different points in my life I've never been able to get a good grip on a new language. I think my mind just doesn't work in a way that good for that, meanwhile I know people with a solid understanding of 3+!

English and French.

Was really fortunate to have amazing French teachers all the way through school (in the UK) and it was a subject that just clicked with me. Ended up studying French at university and spent a year living/working in Paris as part of my degree at a SaaS startup. Ended up getting a job there again a few years later and have since worked between the UK and France and

The advice I'd give is that cultural immersion is as important as studying the language itself. Especially if you want to use these languages professionally, makes it so much easier to connect.

Studying a second language has given me so much, would really recommend it.
