how many monitors do you use?

recently broke my monitor & am now in the market for a new one.

was curious, how many do you guys like to use? i won't lie, the past week with just my laptop screen hasn't been too shabby. got me curious if i should even get one at all.

let me know what you think!

I use 2 now, it has been a great addition for me, especially during video presentations.

2 is the sweet spot.

lop top and one external monitor.
external monitor is above the laptop, with the webcam on top.

this is ideal for me.

I wanted to have 2 external monitors but I couldnt make it work well with the webcam. It ended up being clunky and couldnt make it work haha

two is where ill stay i think

I wonder about the webcam. Might get a ring light that has a mount I can fit it in when I move to 2 external.

(have a ring light behind the webcam I have sitting atop my external)

Weird how I purchased a 2nd monitor this week only and am seeing this post. But alas! Macbook M1 doesn't allow 2 monitors. Now I have to buy a docking station which is almost as expensive as the monitor itself, to run both of these duckers together for me to work on 2 screens. Damn!

I just have the one monitor, laptop. Maybe I like to suffer? I'm able to get more, but I haven't, and it's been fine for me. Some of my colleagues swear by the experience of multiple monitors, though.

by "the one monitor" you mean your laptop's screen, correct?

i actually haven't hated it either!

That's correct. Just the laptop. I migrate from place to place in my house depending on my mood and the noise level in the various environments.

Disclosure: the room with the WORST reception in the house is my actual office. My cell phone doesn't actually work in that room...so it's not optimal, although I have an excellent view with a corner desk (and a honking large monitor!) It was also the room that got converted to the school room during covid, so I migrated upstairs. I'm nearer the coffee, and because I'm not physically attached to monitors, I can be anywhere.

gotta love the no-attachment where you don't feel any pain from moving around because you're not accustomed to always having an external screen. makes you more flexible. thanks for sharing!

It works for me. I prefer simplicity and consistency. Since I travel more often now, I don't want to become accustomed to an elaborate setup and then not have it when I travel.

Roll with 3 monitors. One for email/interoffice messaging and Bravado, one for CRM and then 1 for our operating system.

Used to only run 2 but since I got a 3rd not sure I can go back.

I can't handle just the laptop, so I have a 27" as well.

When I move I'll probably get one of those dual arm mounts and set up my second 27" as well.

Laptop and monitor, i feel like I donโ€™t need additional monitors to monitor slack or email. Unless when filling out an RFP the 2nd monitor is nice but thatโ€™s unusual once a quarter

I have a single 36โ€ ultra wide. I upgraded to it from dual monitors. The single ultra wide is a game changer as long as you get a big enough one. Way better than dual monitors imo

3 usually. 2 minimum

One above the other, then a 3rd monitor just off to the right, turned sideways for Outlook.

Also my phone on a mount under the 3rd monitor, so I guess technically 4

3 curved 32โ€ with mounting wired. Lower emissions mode monitors.

In engineering, software development, sales, or research that is minimal. You will need a way to mount them the way mine are. Two across and one above so you will need 60-65 inches or so across to allow for phone and such beside the monitors. Total cost was under $1000. It will be the best money you ever spent for efficiency and 24 โ€˜s work well too.

The flexibility in research to see word, Zotero, and one for pdfs or lookups google scholar all at one is amazing.

I'm a barbarian using just my laptop actually on my lap
Started during the Covid shutdown when my wife needed to work from home as well and she needs the multiscreen setup in the office a lot more than I do.

Works fine, you can adapt to whatever you need to.

Just oneโ€”either my laptop screen or I have it plugged in to a 24โ€ screen. Iโ€™m used to two screens, but I like to keep my setup mobile. I actually use my phone for most of my work unless Iโ€™m doing RFPs
