How many of you actually hate marketing?

One of Corp's signatures is his hatred towards marketing. Fair, valid, and generally warranted. The satire of that has translated to the War Room and is inherent at this point.

Is this satirical hatred real for you, or do you purely find it funny because you can relate to why one could hate marketing so much?

For the record, I'm not currently in a role where marketing really hinders what I do, but I have been, and I get it.

At my last company marketing did absolutely nothing. Wow 7 attendees at the webinar and 2 ebook downloads? Our absolutely cold leads converted way better. All they did was slow down my outbound process

I'd much rather cold call/email than pursue ass leads. Especially when those ass leads have priority and I'm forced to chase, knowing nothing will come from it.

I think the common grievance and I've experienced this a lot myself is the fact that sales and marketing aren't totally aligned. Marketing is measuring tons of metrics that don't necessarily translate into quality leads converting into sales opportunities. We get our company meeting and marketing is up there touting all this pipeline they've influenced and all us reps are rolling our eyes because we're not seeing the same impact on our side.

I think when done correctly and with the right leadership it can be hugely impactful, but I haven't experienced it yet.

I think this is the best analysis of this. Never really thought about it like that, but you're 100% right.

Love hate relationship for sure! They do offer value but then are quick to take credit for anything that they can get their hands on, so thats my biggest beef.

Marketing sounded a lot cooler until I get into sales and realized marketing wasn't the primary way to generate business

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
The last several places didn't send emails out under my name without telling me, which was a big improvement over my first company. The most annoying thing about marketing is applying way too much value to the work they do.

I hate having stuff pinned to me that I'm not responsible for. Been there, annoying as hell.

It's happening on LinkedIn now. I had a paid message from a rep at a company who's product I am wildly not a fit for. I'm a sales rep selling Mar tech and I got multiple paid messages for something related to heavy machinery in the shipping industry. The annoying part was my options on LinkedIn were book demo or block the rep forever.

I think it's important thought to support Marketing efforts as much as possible though...and not just be apathetic towards them.

Tell that to Corp lmao.

No, I got you though. I appreciate their work and I've generally got no beef, but I understand.

The product I work on has great product marketing. The company generally is weak. It’s pretty clear that our product team is going to be promoted up to fix larger problems. Great for them, bummer for our group.

Good for them though, and good for the company if that's essential. Nice to have that comradery.

Hated marketing at my last corp job. At a startup now and we only have 2 marketing people. I work really closely with one of them and absolutely love him. He actually takes me input and wants to know what I'm seeing.

I feel like startup relationships are different, in a great way. I'm at a startup right now, and the relationships I have with all my coworkers and even my boss are much stronger, transparent, and collaborative.

I agree 100%. Smaller teams, you work more closely. Everyone is trying to pull the rope rather than just being a number. My relationship with my boss is widely better. I feel like he actually cares about me.

@BigCheese It's one of those "there's nuggets of truth in comedy" things that varies org to org. Generally, it's an alignment issue. But, NOTHING is more frustrating than self sourcing a deal and seeing marketing try to claim attribution because an absolute rando accidently downloaded a form from our website in 2015

Marketing at my company sends us webinar leads which are usually pretty good. They design our website and white papers which is something we use. I don't feel very strongly in any direction about marketing. They do sometimes call us into zooms that I think are a waste of time lol.

Carol Baskins is to Tiger Sanctuaries as Marketing is to Sales.

A necessary function, and I am sure it's filled with great people. I just haven't met any yet.
