How many sales people should a company have?

I am asking this question as I've just started a new job and I am a bit concerned about the structure. Company does about 90m USD annual revenue. But sales team is only 6 people, about 40-80 accounts each depending on seniority. Sales director and myself (international sales manager) have around 25m usd each.

Industry is active pharmaceutical ingredient sales (API) mostly selling direct to finished drug form manufacturers globally.

If the company has plans to surpass the 69 mark they have to immediately hire 351 sales people. No more, no less.

Those numbers sounds about right, but with the limited information is hard to really know.

By the way, 42 is the answer to the question.

It all comes down to whether or not the company is losing opportunities because the sales force is to busy/overworked. If they arenโ€™t losing business for that reason they either have the right number of salespeople or too many.

as many as is necessary to effectively cover territory, but few enough that each rep has enough turf to be happy and make bank.ย

That's as specific as I can be. There isn't a one size fits all answer here.ย

Honestly, it depends. Revenue, # of accounts, customer handholding, and geography matter. If you are looking for growth then you need more salespeople. If you are seeing declining revenues from existing customers you most likely need more salespeople (as your current ones may be overtaxed and aren't responsive to customers).
