Keen to hear opinions on this as i'm currently in the process of structuring ours.

I tend to lose patience with anything more than 3 - 4 steps

1. intro phone call
2. formal interview
3. follow-up interview

if there’s a recruiter involved, add that as another step but even a follow-up interview seems excessive to me.

Anything beyond this is really pushing it.

Yep, I'd rather take 3-4 hours and do all of the interviewing at once than rounds of follow-ups.

I personally don’t think that the number of steps is especially meaningful... What the steps entail is infinitely more important...

Do as much in as few steps needed to get a good assessment of your candidate and plan accordingly.

I’ve done it for a panel of 4 and I have nothing against it but it may turn off more senior applicants.

Most I've been apart of have been 4-5. First call with recruiter, second with direct manager, 3rd with VP of sales, 4th with CRO. I will always try to add my own step and ask to speak with a member of the team I'll be joining.

My most recent company was 4 steps, my first company was 1. I do miss the simplicity of it but there is so much amazing talent out there! I beat 232 people for my role.

One of the better processes I’ve been through had 4 steps:
1. Intro call with recruiter
2. Assignment
3. Formal interview
4. Final discussion

As for assignment, I’ve had to presentations although I dislike it. In my company, I instead had to do something more hands on like curating a list of prospect companies that would be good accounts for us to go after.

When I interviewed it was

1. phone screen
2 causal meet the team at HH (pre pandemic)
3. Interview with CRO, VP Marketing, hiring manager
4. Finial screen with COO

now they have a mock call some where in there and they’ve taken the screening by the c-suite out because the company is too big

I dunno how they do it now, but soon after the interview over the phone they sent me an email telling me if you want to move forward I have to have these software and hardware requirements, so i got on it haha

Mine is 4, but anything more than 3 is silly IMO, unless they are struggling to make a decision and then it should be more informal/culture fit type chats. IMO

Then I think up to 5 steps if it moves over 3 or so weeks. A presentation as the final step is common for more junior folks.

I'm going thru this right now for an Enterprise AE gig... so far I've had 4 separate interviews with the hiring director, a couple VP / SVP types, and the CRO.

I have one more interview scheduled later this week where I am running a mock discovery meeting for the hiring team. Whole process is nearing a month in time now largely due to recruiting taking a while to confirm next steps between events.

On a slightly different note... Corp had some advice on interviews a while ago that stuck with me. Always remember to CLOSE the meeting like you would in any sales call. The line I use (pretty sure it's verbatim what Corp originally said) is "I know it's not easy to get to know someone in the span of a 30 minute call, but do you have any reservations moving me forward in this interview process." Sales management has been loving it.

4 steps, including a full shadow day-in-the-life. We are straight up about it from the jump though, so if you want an offer after one 30 minute interview you’ll know it’s not a fit.
