How much does a title matter to you?

I've been an AM, AE, VP, Director, Manager, pool boy, glazed ham, etc....and moved fluidly up and down depending on the size of the org I've joined. And to be honest, I've made the most money and had the most direct reports with a director title. 8 months ago I went from VP to Director when I joined a new org, and am now being promoted to "Head of" a region.

How much do you care about titles? Have they ever held you back or shot you forward? Do you fight for it?

There are some "collectives" out there that term you an associate if you are anything under VP. Stupid concept in my opinion as a VP at a startup and Sales Manager at a Fortune 500 (I've been both) can be on different planets of responsibility and financial success.

The title is important, if the title is real and earned.

If you have 20 years of experience in sales and you have earned your way to becoming a VP with direct reports and a wide org under you. You have deserved that title and you should wear it as a badge of honor.ย

If you have joined a start-up and become a VP of Sales with a team of three sales people. I would keep grinding until the title is worth more

I try and not let titles change the way I handle my calls, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't do more research before hand if I'm calling a CEO vs calling a manager

Titles don't matter much internally, externally for calls, would help though

Definitely think that titles matter.ย  There is not real standardization across orgs, but I think people understand what you've laid out.ย  Higher titles at smaller orgs can equal lower titles at larger orgs.ย  I'd never take a step back if I can avoid it, and if I have to, I'd only take 1 lower.ย  In that sense, I can command more opportunity and more money.ย ย

It really depends on what the title means. I see a lot of people throwing Manager and Director to glorify individual contributor roles.ย

Your career, like all of our pitches, should be telling a story. So in that sense, it does matter somewhat but probably less than role, responsibility, and taking risks.

A title without good job responsibilities would be a waste for my own conscience.

Good job responsibilities + exposure + opportunity + authority without a title would be a waste for the world.

So balance baby.
