How much equity should VP sales get?

Hi everyone,

I've been wondering what is the % of equity early-stage SaaS startups usually assign to VP of Sales?

Example 1:
- seed stage company
- first 15 employees

Example 2:
- series A company
- first 30 employees

I have seen 0.5-1% with a 1-year cliff and 4 year vest. No one hits 4 years

That's interesting, and exactly why I like my money up front.

Thanks for the input!

I start wondering whether all these equity packages even make sense for sales since non of us sticks around for too long.

i really dont have experince at a VP....but idk why everyone gets so fucking horny over equity. the chances that the euity will be worth anything is SO small and the chances of you being around for that are even smaller.

To be fair, I manage to cash out my equity at each company I was at, even if I never stayed longer than 2 years to vest all the shares.

Perhaps I was lucky to land in great companies that did x10-x15 in valuation while I was there.

There is no clear answer we can give you—one because there are very few VPs here and two because it’s unique based on the cap table.

I’ve had as high 12% of a company as the head of sales at a pre-seed company that grew to an A before exit. The board approved it and the CEO forgot about it till we were preparing for exit. Jokes on him.

I’ve had as low as .7% at my current company, but I stand to make more money in the end as we have a more advantageous table.
