We haven't discussed it directly yet. A former colleague works at the company at a similar level and received equity as part of his comp package but didn't go into details. He loves to bet big on any org he's a part of but I'm more risk averse after COVID killed my last company and all my fully vested options evaporated overnight.

Jeez, sorry to hear that. Yeah, I was able to negotiate a good amount. If they haven't offered it I would make sure and bring it up ASAP and get it in writing.ย

Exactly, if you want them you gotta ask for them.

Also, I'm with you on equity vs OTE. It's nice to have some, but considering what % of startups fail I'd place more emphasis on salary. They don't take stock options at the grocery store.

Series B - judging by typical numbers in the US, and based on how well the company has done so far, Iโ€™d anticipate 0.2-1.5% Also, are we talking options or equity?

This seems more like VP of sales numbers. Even 1.5% is high.

Shit, that's a good question. I'm not certain but from googling I would definitely prefer it to be equity.

At director level, already Series B - you'd likely be looking closer to the .2% (if that) vs. the 1.5%ย

Stock options are a type of equity. At a startup options are what you'll be offered. Here's a good primer:ย  https://carta.com/blog/equity-101-stock-option-basics/

You're almost certain to be offered options.

Equity is more complicated for a startup to offer, they are probably never going to budge on this.

Also, for tax reasons, you're probably better off with options.

I ended up with 1% in options after negotiating for greater base. Most importantly, I'm happy with the money and excited for the work.
