How much of your paycheck are you investing?

I always find it interesting to see how much people are investing. Do you have a set amount that you invest each month no matter what you bring in or do you tailor it to each month?

How much do you invest?

Live off the base.

I would add for people w/ debt:

Live off the base.

A percentage of commission goes to pay down more than min payments on debt (For instance, I put 20% of commission into paying off mortgage above monthly payment) and rest gets invested.

I have a minimum goal each month that is what I consider my consistent 401k growth. From there, I have "tiers" in a way for anything over my base salary.

First X amount goes to some improved standard of living things that I can live without but really like having: Ex. Professional cleaning service

After that's covered the majority after that is divided up between floating savings accounts (ex. vacation fund) and investments. This is because I have my safety fund where I need it (if you don't do this first!) Investments are a range of things, majority is in the market, but also put extra towards the mortgage and divide up some into some more fun things (ex. Crypto).

Haha thank you, some of it is my own thinking, I also have a close friend who does enough research into investing that I can usually ask him for ways to approach things and he's got the "best" answer. Sometimes I won't go with it because it isn't as fun, but at least I know what the math says!

15% to ESPP

10% to misc (crypto, mutual funds, etc)

DCA is the term usually used for it too. When you want to invest a certain amount of money but know it's too hard to "time" the market. Just setting a specific number to go in a set time, $XX every 5 days, with the idea you'll buy in low sometimes, high others, and it averages out in the end.

Anywhere you can buy crypto sells it in chopped up bits. They are called Satoshis (spelling might be off). This is how you can get specific amounts paid back and forth.

Coinbase is the standard one, easy to use. There are multiple others with different pro/cons but for someone new I always recommend Coinbase.

Any other cryptos that you recommend right now besides the big ones? I just started last week on Coinbase.

ETH and BTC are always the big dogs so it's good to keep that in mind. Even if they are somewhat outdated compared to new cryptos on the market, they have the name recognition and are starting to become understood at a larger scale. This means mainstream adoption which locks them into the top even more.

I would recommended taking some time to read through the top 10 by market cap on Coinbase. Each coin has it's own spin on things. There are coins that are:

- A store of value (Bitcoin)
- That enable things to happen on a blockchain (Ethereum)
- Stable coins that are tied to a specific thing that they track (usually the US dollar [tether, USD Coin]
- Take blockchain tech and make it smoother for P2P transactions (Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin)
- Do a ton of other things using blockchain enabled tech like cloud storage
- Provide financial services like loans and more

This is heavily simplified, but by reading up on the different projects going on you can get an idea about things you find interesting or want to support.

Also, it's hugely volatile. You should consider anything in crypto to be what traditional money management and investing to be highly risky, even the big ones.

I'm looking at my crypto investments as my risky portfolio. its why its taken me this long to get into it. all money i'm putting into it i know that i can afford to lose it all. so it's moon or bust with these investments.

My wife and I decided that we use her corporate finance salary to pay bills/groceries and other expected expenses and use my commission checks to invest and pay down debt.

We've been able to pay off both of our student loans and build a considerable portfolio and be aggressive about saving for a house. I highly recommend it to any newlyweds without kids.

Yes, i have a target and then set a new one, like a commission plan lol. I do consider that extra more investible or do new renovations/trips/looking at more property purchases too. Dabble in crypto and with a portfolio guy too as sitting in savings makes nothing but i like to know its there

Oh yeah for sure, having that chunk in savings is really important. It allows you to peruse what you want with your money knowing that it's there if you ever need it.

Hitting our emergency savings fun goal was awesome, it was like a mini-raise since we had more to spend with after that was off the books.

I just look at my bank account every now and then, and if there’s extra I don’t need in the immediate future I toss it into my investment accounts.

However, I do contribute a decent portion of my paycheck to my 401k because there is some matching. And my FSA.

depending on your base it might be a little tough to live on. for example when i first started in sales i was making $35k base and no commission and i was scraping by. fast track to now making more base which i live comfortably. so start out small so you can pay your bills, whatever debt you have (if there is any), etc. and go up from there.

had a family member in sales tell me this is what he did and its worked out great. if you want a start on where to look at for investing look at these books

Some small coins in DeFi (Ethereum tokens) like STX. Still very new to DeFi so for now I'm mainly sticking with the big 3 I mentioned (even though LINK isn't big... yet....). Will probably allocate most heavily into ETH for now since they're supposed to have a major update by July
