How soon in the year can I take a vacation...

We're one of those companies that has 'unlimited PTO' (in quotations because we all know it's not unlimited). Anyways, I usually go on a winter snowboarding trip & was going to plan it for January. When I was casually talking about it with my boss, she didn't say anything but gave me one of those looks. Do I put in the PTO request & see if it gets approved? Or not risk it?

Is it too early to take vacation days?

Out of curiosity, how long have you been with the company?  And have you been hitting your targets/numbers?

Agreed, good question! I've been here two years & yes I've been hitting my targets. I don't usually take vacations this early so I wonder if that's where it was coming from

I took a vacation the same month I was hired. Of course, it was planned ahead of time and I gave them the option to have me start afterward. But basically, it's worth a shot.

It's hard to say as your question seems to assume you just started but that means different things to different people. I don't see what the issue could be unless you're new. When exactly did you start?

good point! I rephrased the question a bit so I hope that helps. I've been here two years though, just don't typically see any other colleagues taking time off this early

If you're at or near your number having a problem with a January vacation seems picky. There are some weeks of the year we have to just accept it's not cool to take vacation but if you're not careful you could come up with something every month. It's already looked at funny in March, June, Septemebr, November and December as it's end of quarter/year. If you start to extend that to BEGINNING of quarter/year, then there's only a few months of the year it's acceptable to take vacation during. I say take it.

Take that vacation, if someone gets pissy at someone taking vacation in the first month of 2022 with a track record of success then they are just pissy they didn’t think of it first.

If you've been there 2 years, what's the big deal?  I work on quarterly schedule, so I don't take long vacations in March, June, Sept or Dec but otherwise, it's fair game.  I took a week long trip 5 months into my role

I did it my first week because I was attending a conference. I informed them before my first day that I had this coming up. Otherwise I would wait 2 months minimum.
