How to differentiate myself when applying for the AE roles I really want?

I am unemployed and after looking through some open AE roles, I know that there are some companies I would like to work for and some that I could handle working for. In a way, I am creating my top 25 or top 20 list of target AE roles and I wanted more ideas alongside those I have right now to make myself competitive.

Here is some of what I have been doing.

  1. Cold calling and cold emailing the sales leaders at the given company as well as sending LinkedIn connection requests
  2. Proactively sharing my 30-60-90 day plan with sales leaders along with my resume and asking them for feedback on how I can improve it. Sometimes, I share the plan and tell them that is how I intend to do well and say they are more than welcome to give feedback.

I feel like I could be doing more or that there is something I could be doing that I am not for some of these target companies I want to work for.

I have also created a discovery call worksheet highlighting the questions I would ask on a discovery call.

Do you all have any other things I can do to make myself more successful?

I've never done this personally so try at your own risk but ive heard especially at the big tech compainies (FAANG etc) people will just shotgun outreach to existing people in that department and pitch them on giving a referral since they get paid for it you just have to prove you arent a total bozo and then you can get a fast track interview vs praying they pick you out of 20k resumes

If you can actually get someone to give you some time on a call by messaging them on LI, it can work. That said, most of the FAANG companies do ask referring employees to explain how they know the person they're referring. It usually goes better if it is an actual former colleague.

I know a lot are only paying if they’ve worked directly with the person now. Probably due to the website where you can pay people to refer you

I thought so. Seems like I will have to rule out the FAANG types for now.

To piggy back on this - this is one thing LI is great for. Go back to your former managers and colleagues. Find out where they are working. Check to see if there are open roles. Reach out to your contact, ask for the referral. This is the very best way to get hired.

I’d second that.
Referrals work the best.

The things you’re doing are great too but it may be shooting in the dark, you never know.

Could it be a good idea to talk to X number of AEs and then use the information they give me to then talk to a hiring manager? That way I am coming to hiring manager on a cold call with information their AEs gave me and making my case that way.

Beyond a referral, proactively reaching out on LI helps

And of course knowing how to work the ATS. Filling your resume with all the keywords in the JD is very important.

You can leverage LI by asking colleagues in the job role you want for advice, info on the role and who the hiring manager is in a company (if you don't know that already). I did that with my current role and the team were discussing me internally: turned out, they liked my outreach and interest and they said that they appreciate the investment. I just typed messaged lol but it worked.

Nice! Could I leverage the info they give me and then talk to hiring manager about that info?

Absolutely, you could say something like "Hi HiringManager, TeamMember said it's best to have a chat with you about JobRole" etc. Works wonders

I'm in the job market as well.

If your resume is way better than mine, maybe you can afford to be picky, but at this point, I'm just applying to every good opening (and reaching out to the hiring manager, sales leaders, etc).

It's great to vet out employers and be picky...But in this economy, you've got literally hundreds of people applying for all the same roles. So, be prepared to drop your standards.

The problem with sending a 30/60/90 is that you don’t know anything more that the role description. You’re making massive assumptions, and while it’s proactive, it’s inaccurate.

Reach out to people on the team, ICs.... tell them you're interested and why, ask if they have any advice or are open to a 15 minute conversation. Big fan of helping fellow sales people out for the sake of sales karma. Also gives you insight into your potential teammates and how open they are to helping others out.

Bonus for them and you if you can get them to refer you in as they'll likely get paid on it.

I might also try to ask about the biggest initiatives for the sales team this year and how a new hire aligns with them.

Prospect into the company like you would a normal prospect. Reach out to the hiring manager/recruiter, let them know that you applied and ask for a virtual coffee to talk about their goals / expectations with the role. Find someone in the current role and ask the same thing and get the inside scoop of what's going on there. Back channel via partners, former employees, etc. Show them you know them.

That’s always an option. Are you sending out so many ina single day you can’t dedicate 20-30min to customize your resume? I have a folder with 40-50 customized resumes, each with the company’s title in the file name so I know is which.
