How to find consulting clients?

i do sales consulting for startups as my side hustle. Over the years it’s been like random companies that get recommended to me or I was interviewing with them and I became a consultant, point is it’s not consistent.

how do I go about finding consulting gigs? Any tips or tricks are appreciated!

So for transparency, i am not a consultant. But here is what I see all the successful ones do:

1. be super specific on WHO you help and WHY.
2. get references from current/past customers
3. Use linked in or some platform where your customers live. where do the founders of these early stage companies spend time? Figure that out.
4. content: put content out that shares you unique POV of why start ups struggle with sales. share about your process and how you work with ppl.
Put all of that out there for companies to find to start to understand how you work. that will help build a brand and drive interest in you and your business.

Ive dabbled in this recently. You’d want to try early stage startups whose teams don’t have a lot of sales know how - like pre series A/seed

I would find owners and sales VPs of smaller companies and start ups on LinkedIn and reach out.

Can you ask your current customers for referrals?

This seems like an easy way to get started.

That plus references - why they picked your company and what they liked about working with you.

I'm going to be biased here. Post great content in this War Room and see what happens.

I think Tennisandsales hits it on the head, I do think the content you put out there can make a huge difference as well, if you are silent online (which is fine) you are probably going to have to work a little harder to get the work but if its your side gig maybe thats preferrable.

I would also probably focus a lot on getting testimonials from the companies you have helped including hard facts such as numbers, anything to translate confidence to a prospective customer.

I did/do consulting on the side.

Have a website for showcasing.

Referrals and RFPs are big easy wins. Usually the big name agency's apply. Have a reasonable price - I have $200/hr with minimum hour requirements which is usually 40-50/hr lower than my competitors.

Did you already have a website. To gear up - I would reach out to some of my clients I worked with and I would also ask for referrals if possible. I would also start my newsletters and be active on Linkedin sharing tips etc.

I would also reach out to companies that work with small companies and see if there is any partnership synergy

Referrals are critical. Besides start-ups, I'd look for successful SMB companies where growth is starting to level off, but they want to go to the next level.
