How to get it right with a new colleague?

Here’s some context: I was the first sales hire at the start up I work for and I’ve been crushing it for the last year and a half. We’ve hired another AE to join me and take some stuff off my plate, which is great.

I wanna get this relationship right, keep crushing it and help her crush her quota too. Have any of y’all been in the scenario? Any advise you’d give me?

It can be a tricky balance. I’m assuming she doesn’t report to you but will be leaning on you a lot at first to get up to speed.

Be direct about challenges that impact sales but try to keep the subjective negativity to yourself.

Outline the ways you anticipate providing support and ask if there’s anything beyond this that would help.

They won’t know what they don’t know, to some degree. I know I’m much more comfortable at a new job once I’m able to at least quantify the knowledge gap so that I can own my development a little more.

The easy way I’ve found to help folks is to help them navigate the internal side of the company.  Personalities, unwritten rules, whose the go to person for getting things done, etc.

Interesting. Given that we’re pretty small, this shouldn’t be too difficult. But I like the approach, for sure.

Stay humble, especially if going for a promotion. You don't want to be a dick, still not promoted in a years time, but now you have competition. Make all interactions nurturing and supportive.

What I needed to hear, it’s easy to get ahead of oneself and begin to think we’re too big for our shoes. Thanks.

Transparency is a big win here. Don't try to hide anything, be an open book of advice, insight, success, and failures.
