Senior Relationship Manager

How to get promoted?

So I'm at a crossroad right now. Good job, good pay but the job doesn't trigger me anymore. The company promotes 'personal development and guidance to your next play' and 'you'll be promoted within 1 year' but nothing is happening so far. Any advice on where to start?

Start by looking externally for a new opportunity where your ambition might be taken a little more seriously.

Yeah I might have to.. Any advice on how to handle this discussion internally for now? If I get nowhere I will have to go externally for sure.

Personally, I would speak with your manager and colleagues that work in the position that you are looking to fill. Ask them what they do, ask if you can help. Then leverage that with your manager, hopefully he sees you as a good candidate for the role, if you don't have your manager's blessing, then I'd consider a switch externally.

I feel like my manager is blocking me atm. Very good tip to speak with colleagues working in that position, that might give me good insights.

Would you advise to look externally and maybe use an external offer (if I'd get one) to show my current manager?

Leave no doubt that you are the best person for the advanced role based on your own performance numbers/metrics, and act as if you already have the job when it comes to helping the team. We want to be careful about unnecessarily working for free or taking on too much responsibility, but demonstrating your value to the individual who has decision-making power over the promotion can only help. When selling to your prospects, we know that if you don't ask for the business then chances are you aren't going to get it, use that same approach with your boss! Make sure that they know your personal goals and how your promotion will help them do their job better/help the team/help the company

I personally would start seeing what the world has to offer. Even speak with competition as long as im not violating any agreement. Always good to know your worth in $$
