how to negotiate a higher pay

aloha,

If any of you have expereince in negotiating a higher pay during the interview process, how did you navigate it?

My specific concern is that I am located in San Francisco where the cost to live is insane, but some of the companies I am interviewing for are not.

I'm sure most companies understand this dilemna but there has got to be some hidden gems as far as tactics and points to be made.

let me know guys thanks

This might be a helpful thread for you, it is posted by an HM but has lots of good thoughts from the 'being hired' side

To be blunt, a company is not going to give you more money because you live in an area with a high COL. The reason for more money will have to be because of your own value to them and what you, as their employee, can do for them. Highlight your accomplishments at your current company and use them to point out why they make you a better candidate who should get a higher base + OTE.

How much do you think you are worth? Have that number in mind before you apply.

The best advice is to know your worth and center the conversation around the value you will bring in the role.

External factors that drive your costs up are not really the company's problem. Yeah, yeah, they may want you in a certain location, etc... so to a certain extent there is an impact. But your decisions about lifestyle don't drive the value they expect to get out of you as an employee.

They are investing resources and gambling that the investment in you will pay off to their net benefit. The more net benefit you can deliver, the better your compensation can be.

Do you know what your quota / other expectations will look like? That's a good starting point to do research around what similar roles are paid.

From there you need to determine where you stack up against the top performers for a given set of expectations and calibrate your comp ask accordingly.

The problem with salary negotiation is that you have to keep in mind that you are probably not the only applicant. But, for this you must make it clear that you have valuable experience that will contribute to the company. I am one of those who recommends that you wait for your work to speak for you before proceeding to negotiate your salary.

"Everything in the offer looks good, but I had a figure of X% higher in mind". Then shut up. See if they will meet it or meet you half way.

As @Sunbunny31said, employers won't care that you decided to live in SF.

You need to build a business case as to how you provide value, and establish your worth in this market.

No matter what role you are applying, be sure to ask "Is the pay negotiable" by the end of the interview and you will be surprised when it works in your favor

Also, always ask for what you deserve, don't settle for the pay being advertised/ communicated
