My roommate is using Yousician and he seems to be getting better. But imagine you'll have to supplement it with some Youtube videos and other online resources

Yousician seems great but I find it very boring at times. That was the first thing I saw actually but it's a great app.Β

Any course your roommate is enrolled in?

Unfortunatley I don't know which courses specifically he's enrolled in. I would recommend taking in-person lessons though. That's how I learned

They may be expensive, but this is a lifelong skill

Your best option would always be getting a teacher. Depending on where you are at there usually are some options either on like Facebook Market place or your local music store. Covid is limiting more of the Music Store options but you can probably find someone who can teach you.

You can also ask a friend or colleague that plays to teach you some things. Most Guitarist are pretty helpful and friendly.Β

Really though like anything out there it comes with time and a lot of practice I've learned most of my guitaring via YouTube. Find a simple song you love and find a tutorial. Then just practice practice practice. Repeat.Β  You'll be able to play and will see improvement pretty quick after that first 2-3 songs are learnt.Β

Everyone that doesn't play guitar thinks cords are the hardest part but really the hand that can get tricky is your strumming/picking hand.Β

For me I learnt a lot of the basics on YouTube and then I took lessons to help fix bad habits and to get me to the next level. Then I didn't have time to justify the cost and now just play for myself and learn the occasion song or two.Β

There are some good online classes, Youtube has free lessons as well.Β

You can always get an in-person lesson if there are some available in your area.Β

I taught myself a few years ago, key is to just not get frustrated and keep practicing!

I learned through some Youtube videos and strumming through my favorite songs on Ultimate Guitar using their chord charts. Just play every day and you'll start to get good over time.Β
