How to tell micro managing boss to give you some space/trust?

Long time listener , first time poster here

I was hoping the community could share some insight as to the best way to address a situation in which a manager he's being a hellofa micro-manager.

Bit of background, my manager used to be one of us sales warriors, but then got promoted. As part of the re-org, some of his account coverage got redistributed. I get that he wants to make sure that some of his babies are well taken cared of, but at a certain point the micro-managing has to stop. Beyond the obvious annoyance, its fostering a lack of confidence in his team and confusing the heck out of clients at times.

Need a way to tell him to back off without pissing him off.

Any thoughts from the group?

Appreciate you all fellow sales warriors.

What are you afraid of? Any respectable manager will take the feedback if you're genuinely honest. "Listen man, back off a bit." "Please pump the brakes." I'd bet there's some distrust in the team and himself. So, the question is, how do you get him to trust you. I'd start with assurance. Then hold yourself to that assurance. Continue to make sure he stays back. If he continues to break that after you discussed backing off, then ask for a 1:1 with his boss.ย

@fuzzyย I think this is generally good advice if youโ€™re dealing with someone who is level-headed, mature and perhaps donโ€™t realize theyโ€™re micromanaging.

I think in this case with theย @Ledudeย situation, youโ€™re dealing with someone with a lot on insecurity (which is generally the most common reason behind micromanaging) possibly mixed with distrust of colleagues... Itโ€™s very easy to say the wrong thing in these situations so be careful and try not to stick your neck out with criticism before building some trust.

@Ledudeย - Not easy to navigate. I'd schedule a 1:1 and just talk it out leave with a mutual plan. What does he want to know, where can you fill him in, how can you have or earn your freedom.ย
