How would you want to be supported by your manager?

Some people want a totally hands off manager, some want someone who provides good feedback and insights, no one likes a micromanager. So, how do you like to be supported by your manager and what do you think they should do to make you better in your role?

Anyone with the “leave me alone” mentality is leaving money and opportunity in the table. The elite are the ones who are chasing feedback, they want to be pushed, challenged, “managed”.  Coachability is the #1 trait in a successful seller.

You're mostly right but where this becomes problematic is if your boss gives you terrible advice or trying to guide the deal in a way that will end up jeopardizing it because they just don't know better.

feels like this is especially true with bosses who haven't held a bag in a while

I do not understand micromanagement. If you need to be micromanaged you shouldn't be an AE. My opinion of course.

I like to have the autonomy to make my own decisions and run my business (territory) the way I want, abiding by company policies. I also have a specific day and time to meet one on one weekly to give the run down and receive feedback. I also figure things out on my own so if I go to my manager they know I've exhausted every avenue possible and need help. Trust, support, and guidance.

I think the "figure things out on my own" is key too. Good sales people have that ability

Leave me alone, respectfully lol. No but in all seriousness I want my manager to be a liaison between my team and the executive team making decisions about the direction of the company. Advocate for the sales team and negotiate for better comp plans!

-Feedback on calls/demos as and when possible (not like micro analysis but high level stuff that I can do better)
-Guidance in moving deals through tricky stages (key strategic levers that can be pulled)
-Support and Understanding when things may not be moving the way you'd like them to
-Provide interface with top management in the company to ensure visibility of your work

the guidance piece I feel like too many people overlook. They want it to be "their deal" too bad

I think the top sales reps know how to leverage help at hand in the best way possible. But then again, it completely depends upon the company/team culture. If everything is territorialized, people are less likely to seek guidance.

I like if they listen to what I'm struggling with - listen to understand, not to throw back some weak solution in my face.

For this thread, curious how folks feel about "formal" sales training? Like workshops and stuff like that. Do you like that, or feel like you would rather do it on your own VS a boss forcing it?

Formal sales training is important to understand methodology but it really comes down to failing on sales calls and reviewing and always taking constructive feedback to get better.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
We had a different thread on this. Most people (myself included) indicated that these trainings have been a waste.

I am a big fan of Daniel Pink. All people, once their basic needs are met, are looking for three things. They are looking for Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose.

Autonomy: The freedom to do their job how they want. They may have ideas to create more customers. (Social media, podcasts, blogs, etc). Let them try it.

Mastery: They want to be better at what they do. Offer them feedback and suggest ways they can get better.

Purpose: They want to feel like they are making a difference. Simply tell them how much they are helping you out
