[humblebrag] Who has helped their buds get hired? (i just did)

Just got 2 sales-compadres hi-paying gigs - and you should too!

hello fellow sales fiends:

I only come here to vaguely brag about my undying work-friendship, and my no-man-left-behind-in-a-zombie-company loyalty.

Over the past 2 weeks, I've now gotten 2 separate previous sales dudes hired at two separate, well-paying gigs. Both were stuck in our previous zombie company -- which closely resembled real-humans without eyebrows stuck inside some futuristic human-battery-pod, whose only purpose was to suck on goo and create a few kilowatts for the true robot overlords - as seen from the '99 Sci-Fi Epic Thriller, The Matrix, starring Keanu Reevs and Lawrence Fishburn.....

One, just accepted an Enterprise AE role for a growing HCM global-software org. Base: 6-figs, total comp $200ish

Second, just accepted a BD Management role, launching a startup BDR team with a recently funded niche-ERP Saas firm. Base: 6-figs, total comp $180ish

The Point: Help your network. This is merely the beginning of my sales-fiefdom.

Let's get a feel-good humblebrag going... Who has helped their sales-bros/chicks/theys find a gig recently?

Well in my last industry I made people’s whole careers - but my favorite was probably one particular gentleman. He was working somewhere else, was a legal immigrant from Colombia, didn’t speak the best English but damn he was the hardest worker and always showed up with the best attitude. He helped me out on his one day off because my main employee was 8 months pregnant.

At his main place of employment, they wouldn’t really train him or let him do the more difficult tasks because he was always willing to do the shit work no one else wanted to do. He never complained, but those other tasks were client facing and came with tips so he was losing out. I took it upon myself to personally teach him everything he needed to know that would rival the very best in the world. Well beyond what those others knew.

I have a very good network, and everyone knew that if someone got my training/ seal of approval, they were guaranteed an outstanding employee (I’m also known to fire people within their first day if I don’t think they will work out - so if you make it past a few weeks you’re good haha). He stayed with me until I didn’t need the cover but immediately got hired by someone else that catapulted him to the very top. His salary tripled and he is set for the rest of his life.

Others passed this gem of a human by because they were racist fucks. Idiots.

This.
This right here is the best feeling in the world.

Now some may call 'heresy' - but I found this feeling so much more fulfilling than winning deals on my own, that I came back to management.

It was nice pursuing my "dream" of being a ***Sr. Enterprise AE***... but then I realized it wasn't my dream at all. That feel-good-feeling is one that trumped cash (for me at least)

I love being in management. I fully plan to transition into it one day, but you gotta spend your time in the trenches to be worth a shit and that's what I'm currently doing because this is a new industry for me.

And you're exactly right. I love helping others succeed, much more than myself. I realized that as an athlete. Watching my students win was much more satisfying than any championship I earned. I know I come across as a stone cold bitch, but deep down I'm an empathetic people pleaser. I just needed to learn how to set boundaries because the world is full of takers who will exploit the shit out of you. Even when I would fire people on their first day, I was really helping them. Why waste anyone's time when I know it won't be a good fit?

Get ya respect in the field, for sure. It is so massively helpful in educating your team(s)

I still pull up my sales planning worksheets, utilize skills I've learned as an AE, the perspective, etc---  and now have a better understanding on how my reps can be more impactful to the org. - and how they can make more money themselves...

AE field experience for me was soooo important for my career, but I hated the living shit out of it about 90% of the time.

So true! I’ve chose to make a little less for equity but I’ve helped place buddies at amazing startups. Take care of your friends! It only takes one bad move from our leaders to find ourselves on the unemployment line. You’ll want your friends to look out for you too when you need it. Great post @legacysoftware!

Absolutely. I made it abundantly clear to them: "I know it feels like altruism right now. But we'll all have moments of helping each other out"

Uh oh, i think i was recruited for the same hcm global software company yesterday. I’ve been trying to help some others out, espicially with sending them to recruiters that contact me. A few have been to the final round but no offers yet.

Birds of a feather flock together!

Over the last 7 to 10 years I've met a ton of people, but out of everyone I've met, only a handful are people that I vibe with on a personal level and absolutely love jamming with when it comes to working.

The type of folks you're gonna call first if you ever start a business.

I try to take them with me wherever I go, or at least, we stay in touch and bounce ideas on how to better ourselves, our quality of life, our wellbeing with our families.

The cool thing about this is that now, whenever I recommend or introduce someone with my personal seal of approval, they get fast-tracked to their role because of the history of great recommendations/hires.

Honestly, I may have hooked them up with an introduction, but these peeps that I'm talking about, they've been making their own luck by making a name for themselves and always striving to succeed, I just happen to know them and invest in keeping a great relationship with these peeps :)

Yeah absolutely! -- Maybe I'm a "giver" but I even took my folks who have the "sales-street-smarts" but maybe not the "sales-book-smarts" and coached them up for interviews, presentations, etc.

We even review decks, help them with formatting (makin' it look pretty) - and other stuff that overall - i hope - is helpful their success.

Overall - i just see it as 'Phase 0' of our future start-up.

I'm the inverse of this humblebrag since I'm literally the only person on my team that wasn't hired by employee referral

Ah, the hard road in.

It's been quite a while since I've entered a role blind, naked and ignorant. -- How'd that go for you?

Consistently number 1. Coming from ice cold enterprise SDR to this sort of AE role (well known company, mostly existing accounts) gave me a massive edge. Historically the team was very inbound focused, but I relentlessly outbound

This is my current situation.
Taking a Global BD team that was being spoon fed.
Any increase in outbound-created opps is a win.

Outbound, especially in APAC, is so huge. Everyone (except for Aussies, I guess.) is afraid to do it out of "respect" for the prospect.

*side note: I continually hear "We don't like cold calling like Americans do..." .... "Uh... You think anyone LIKES to get cold calls?"

Just started a new gig and got one of my sales sistas hired with me! She was in my first sales class out of college at a MLM we didn’t know better to not work for. Fast forward a handful of years and we both got the BAG at our new gig. Built in battle buddy.. and misery loves company during onboarding.

So amazing you have someone to get excessively drunk with while you both kill it!! And extremely drunk with also if you don’t!

Ah, I helped my mate get a job for a company that pays way more than I get. He bought me one singular Stella Artois in return.

Love it. But then again, that's why we are mates ay.
