I didn’t manage to close the candidate

My best candidate I was talking to for a month just texted me they has chosen another offer to accept. I know for sure it wasn't a salary issue or something measurable, it's just my selling skill wasn't that great. What do you guys do in this case? Do you try to do the last push or are you trying to learn something from this outcome? tell me your stories and approaches

Maybe next time don't talk to someone for a whole month. You have to move faster if you really want someone.

That depends on what you’re selling. I talk to some people for years before they decide to hire me as their broker

Agreed. But this person is talking hiring. If you're looking to hire someone, you have to do it fast, especially in this market.

Ah. I missed that part. My last three jobs have taken months from the initial contact to signing though, so I still think it depends on the industry to some extent.

True but it’s also the agency’s responsibility to sell the client on why moving quickly is important and set upfront expectations with candidates and clients on how the pace will go. You still have to control the process even though it’s like herding cats.

I agree it's important to not waste time, but I recently had someone tell me they felt "too much pressure" through an interview process because we went from initial interview to offer in just a couple weeks. Tough to tell with each individual.

I completely agree. The faster you can send an offer, the more loved and wanted the candidate will feel.

Can confirm. In hiring it is true just like many sales "time kills deals"

Push and ask. What would it take to get you here? See what they say.

A month? In this job market? I’ve seen people get hired and leave and get hired again within a month.

Ask for feedback to get an answer. 🤷‍♀️

Definitely worth asking why he/she made the decision he/she did?

Its also worth asking for feedback on your style. No harm in asking their thoughts on the interview process

if you ask for the sake of learning, don't try to sell them again.

Gotta ask for feedback and if you really like the candidate tell them to feel free to follow up with you in the future if things change.

That's actually how I ended up in my current job - turned down offer about 8 months before my CEO followed up and I just happened to be ready to make a move. Met him for a beer and he offered again - I accepted to start a few weeks later. (He was flexible and let me close out a few last deals at my old company)

I'm going to go a bit feely here, and it sounds like you're holding yourself at "fault" here. Them accepting another offer isn't on you. It's their choice. I'd imagine it was a disconnect somewhere, or an even better opp came up. I'd reach out, see what they say. If you want you could even reach out about feedback on interviewing / speaking with you.

I’d ask for one my call and just be direct “where’d we go wrong here?” Something of that nature.

How are you sure it was your skills? This candidate might have gotten a better offer somewhere else and sometimes that is true and not about the money exclusively. My point is don’t doubt yourself. I’d go with the approach @flintironstag suggested.
