I don't take sales calls/ Don't have budget

Full Cycle Rep here, cold calling and closing at once.

Me and colleague get this when connected but can find it hard to overcome. A few ways to pivot:

1) I don't want to sell you anything now

2) Don't expect you to pay for anything now

3) Are you looking to buy something?

You can't win them all! This is to mainly IT/BizOps folks.

I always liked "thats exactly why im calling" its a good way to disrupt the convo and all you some space to ask a question or two and course correct the convo.

Lean in to the bullshit excuse - If sales ain't awkward at times you're going to lose a lot of opps.

Yes this is a good approach, unfortunately in this case here my questions were weak! Better luck next time.

'Ah, nah fair, do you usually take calls?' Go from there.

They answer...

'Ah well, it sounds cliche...but (add a really good example). So i get you hate them as I do too.'

Like this, down to earth and suits my UK Local Gov Market.

When yous ay good example, what do you mean? Like a customer case, or an example of cold calling?

As an example you want to make them be on the same wavelength as you or visa versa - e.g ‘sounds cliche and I don’t want to be your typical salesperson but do you have any availability next week?’ ‘Look, I hope you realise if I don’t ask this question I’m not doing my job’ And my go too…’mate, I also hate getting unwanted calls and marketing emails so shall we say set a date and I’ll make sure I unsubscribe you until that date?’ Making them know they aren’t going to be pestered nor speak to a classic salesmen is key I also at the start say ‘look I’m not after your services, it’s more of a business enquiry so I hope you don’t mind’ when you’re honest it works.

I would ignore and go right into my sales story... "I don't take sales calls" doesn't matter once they are on the phone... "don't have a budget" is mute until they understand the value... so if your sales story is compelling, it won't matter to them either.

Yes, this would be my go to- they can often refer you to someone else in the org. But in many cases they just hang up haha.

Good pivots. Especially if you say this pleasantly. Most folks don't like being a dick to someone who's being kind

Yes, good approach. I don't want to sell you anything today, but understand if there is scope to help. Invariably it is a combination of no money/ don't want to waste time.

I usually follow up by: Well I would be a awful sales person if I tried to sell you something right now. But just out of interest, how …………..
Perhaps it could work for you as well! Give it a go!

What can you say in bed that you can also say in a sales meeting?
