I Got Fired Today

I was in the office by 8:45, kept working like normal and my boss walked in around 11 and fired me.

During the firing he said I'm not cut out for sales and reiterated (no less than 5 times) that I'm a good person.

I lost a job where I made 100k plus my commission and I didn't even sweat it and in fact, on the subway ride home I was happy. anyone experience something like this?

Don't let them make you question yourself. Getting fired in sales is almost a right of passage.

Early this year I was fired for the first time. Was a tough blow, was making crazy money and selling like a machine. Numbers slipped for a host of reasons, some my fault, others not. Began to question if I belonged in sales.

It wasn't till I was out for about a week that my head cleared. The place was actually a nightmare. Very "kool-aid" culture.

Fast forward I'm making more in a less stressful gig. The biggest tragedy of the whole thing that I let them get into my head and question myself. You will be fine, one door closes another will open.

Absolutely another door will open, it always seems like the end of the world in the heat of the  moment, but usually things work out for the better, whether it be pay, sanity, culture, etc.

I'm glad to hear you're no longer working at Gong.

(Is that the joke I'm supposed to make?)

But in all seriousness, that sucks, and I wish you the best! I'm sure you'll land on your feet, but don't feel guilty if you take a minute to enjoy some time off :)

🤣🤣🤣 I appreciate it! Luckily I’m taking a week off to visit family in Illinois that I haven’t seen in 6 years. Time to relax.

Hah! I’m sure my Italian ass grandmother would approve of that. Although I’m sure we will drive by their old neighborhood in the South Side of Chicago, ample opportunity for drugs there.

Yup. I’ve gotten fired, and it’s been one of the most relieving moments of my sales career. I was super depressed, anxious, constantly thinking about the job, and also thinking about leaving and figuring out how to break it to my boss. BAM - drove home upset, obviously, but so fucking relieved. Found a new gig, actually got a raise… have never been happier.

Serious advice. This is why in sales you need 6 month safety blanket.

Incredibly hard to take the that big commission check and stick in a conservative betterment account. But too many stories like this, and it will let you find the right company next

Absolutely. I wonder if this is why I’m freaking out. I have $10,000 liquid. $32,000 in a 401k and a credit line of $38,500.

You're getting there. But that's really the spot you need to be in this profession.

Money should motivate but not be a necessity. Hard spot to get to. In this world, we like to live like what we expect to make, not what we do make.

My suggestion has always been to pay bills and live off fixed income (base/spouse income/other income streams) and save all commission. Very very hard in practice, but after a few years you can do what you want in life

Can we send him the Kill Bill directors cut full set? I think it would make an excellent parting gift.

Obviously the card would say “I wanted to look at things a little bit differently”

Everyone gets laid off at least once unless they are a ass licker and you don’t want to be an ass licker - my grandfather (translated)

This has happened to me, I came to the conclusion that I hated that job but I didn’t realize it until I got fired. I came up with a system that would help me detect what made me love a job and for what reasons I should stay in a company. I’ve never gotten fired again and don’t stay more than a year in a company I don’t like. I have even quit from a job to go to another where I make less but am happier.

Slightly in touch with this only had a wife and 1 year old child at the time. Wasn't freaking about finances as I had enough saved up to cushion the blow but was super pissed as I was the only AE to close a single deal in the last 3 months.

Excuse given was that my call volume was much lower than the other AEs but the reality was it was an internal politics issue. I called some people out that had the power to make my life hell.

Turned out to be a blessing. Doing so much better now than I ever could have at that company.

Been there. I didn’t freak out I was more disappointed with how lost leadership was. I was proven right and landed a better role, it worked out for me. Just pick up the phone. Call your friends and connections. People always want to help.

Yeah actually. Crazy story and as I reflect most of my sales career is crazy stories about companies not giving a fuck and/or doing stupid "disruptive" things.

I took an Enterprise role where I negotiated a big severance package. (High risk move) I was above "quota" but they thought new logos were more important than revenue so I was comped on the logo even though they weren't driving revenue (market maker type company). I saw the writing on the wall and was well into finding a new role despite being above "quota".

You can't be profitable on a stupid plan like this. Also not really an enjoyable sale, just profitable role.

So I was on the final round of interviews when they let go all the enterprise team they hired in the last year.

Got 6 months severance and start a new role 3 weeks later. I was pretty happy with that move

getting fired sucks, i'm sorry that happened.

BUT

for me, a BRUTAL firing three years back set me on a path (now 2 jobs later) to being way better and happier at selling. my advice? take the positives and run - shit load of hiring going on out there and you are not your past role.

True that, towards the end my face was twitching at work and about four times a day I would get hives on my body from the stress. When I told my wife I was fired she didn’t even ask how I was she said ok see you soon. Let me know last night I was visibly miserable in the mornings and I didn’t used to be. Not the first time I’ve been fired, I just hope that it’s the last 😂 Oddly enough as well, I was offered a job this morning for the same salary.

Echoing this. A buddy of mine used getting the axe to cut expenses and ended up paying off his loans when he was making bank again as a result.

Bro (or maam), it wasn't meant to be. I started my sales career at a place that didn't support me and performed terribly. Kept at it and I've been straight P-clubbin ever since. If you don't like sales then that's okay, too. Good luck.

I’m about 90% sure I’m getting fried Monday as my boss forgot I was on vacation out of the country this week. I just landed and he’s left me 17 voicemails asking why I’m not in meetings all frantic. Then sent me an email letting me know we are having a meeting with my VP to address my “issues” while I’ve at 200% of plan. To be completely honest I can’t wait for this Monday morning meeting.

That's awesome! Mine is one I've kind of expected... one of those things where the job was misrepresented to me and while I would have been wildly successful at what it was supposed to be, I'm not successful with what it actually is. Oh well, ya live and ya learn.

Cheers to a celebration this evening for you!

Got fired once, and it was tough. It made me question my skills and  affected me financially. Nevertheless, after a while I was able to reflect, identify my areas of opportunities and my strenghts, get up to find an opportunity that was a good fit for me. And guess what, I found it :) I wish you find that place and that job that makes you super happy and thankful that you were not longer in the other job.

I've been fired from every job and I took it in stride. Now I'm at an early stage startup and crushing it - there's always more opportunities but make sure to give it you 100% so there's no doubt on your ability to execute - just find the right place.

I got "fired" once...

Early on in my career, I was forced to reapply and re-interview for my own job. I'd been there for about 4 years. In the end, I was told that I'd not been "selected for RE-hire" for my own job! LOL
My job was assigned to a newbie with no experience that accepted the role for 1/2 the base salary.
