They're two completely different shows. You can't compare them.ย
UK version - satire on the day to day going on in office life. Nothing was over the top, actors were not extreme polarized people with set ways to act.ย
US version - first few episodes tried to emulate the David Brent boss and relationship with Jim/Gareth. It didn't work for American audiences. They needed obvious "jokes"/pranks. You have to admit, as the show found its own voice the characters became parodies of themselves. (I still enjoy the show, for what it is, a good comedy)
