I’m gonna quit

Top performing SDR here. So I can't stand my manager and I am going to bail on my company. they keep moving the stake for AE promotion and I took an interview with a friend who is director of sales for a med device company and received an offer to take over a high performing territory and start closing my own deals. Curious what everyone's thoughts are on bailing on SAAS for med device. I don't see many people doing that, but since he's my best friend and I know how much money he makes this territory will perform the same or better than his which should take me from 100k-300k once I get things moving and they offered me a salary higher than my current ote.

any downside?

I loose remote, not sure I care about that and I have to drive.

Med device is not for the weak. It will make you into a closing beast.

I would for sure take the jump.

Getting closing experience is super important and there are MANY software companies that look at med tech sales as very transferable skills.

I am in the life sciences industry and see med device ppl get hired all the time.

Med Device is where it’s at. I don’t plan on leaving SaaS but if I did that’s where I’d go. Just avoid pharma 😂

I think you’ll like the Jump, I say do it.

Had my manager reach out during my dial time to ask why I only had 10 dials and if I was even doing it. I responded with yeah I just finished booking a meeting. Then….. crickets from my manager, literally no response.

Only downside is higher stakes and opportunity for failure. But honestly if you stick to your basics and leverage your inside support as much as possible (find out how the best closers are running their territories) then you stand to reap the rewards.
Best of luck.

You can always go back to SaaS. Sounds like you have a good opportunity. Take it.

Joking. At the end of the day, what do you want most in your career and what will get you that? Only you can answer that.

Yeah man you are exactly right. I should be getting the offer today and I am at a verbal commit right now. But after having 3-4 1-1’s a week with my manager where I get clubbed over the head with kpi numbers by my manager and told I suck at everything I’m ready to go (I am in a distant first place for closed won business since I started on my SDR team).

My homie runs the sales team and his #1 hiring criteria is to find a rep who will leave him alone and just work, which I think I will derive maximum levels of happiness since my goal is as much autonomy as possible.

No brainer to me. If you don't mind losing the remote opportunity.

You can always come back to SaaS, worked with someone recently who was a top performer in med device and made a nice jump with close a matching salary in software.

Congrats on accepting the offer letter, you'll crush it. Go get 'em!

Downside is losing remote, and SaaS experience which scales nicely as an AE

Yeah I agree, but if I can be at 300k, 3 years from now I don’t think SAAS would move quicker than that. Unless I got lucky with another startup. My current startup is pacing to probably be a unicorn.

Don’t go to med device if you’re purely driven by money. Doctors will smell that shit on you a mile away. Also the specialty you call on and if it’s OR or non-OR is important. If you are going to be in a space that has call, best of luck with that. I would only ever do something in elective surgery.

I’m actually not, I spent 4 years broke as fuck working for a non profit helping people who were homeless. But the Bay Area is expensive and I’m pretty good at this sales thing so I need to chase dollars, but I enjoy helping people as well.

If you’re a top performing SDR I’d just go above your managers head. Go to the VP, HR, fuck even C-suite. Companies hate loosing talented sales people even if it’s a SDR. If your startup is on track for unicorn status, your growth trajectory is better there. Med sales doesn’t scale like SaaS companies, and if you have ANY chance to get equity or options that’s your golden ticket to the lottery. Don’t just take what your buddy does on a whim, see if upper management is better than your chum manager.

Upper management is solid and leadership team is great. But I’ve been over it for a while and wanted to bail, already accepted an offer. Your insight is valid though and I appreciate rational suggestions like the one you just made. I’m actually stoked to get out of the house, not sure I’m super concerned about losing my equity even though I was like employee number 45. It is what it is, my sanity is more valuable than anything. I’ve been stressed in the role for months and money no longer carries a large enough value to compensate for that.

There are some other things that I’m not happy about either but didn’t want this to be a giant boohoo fest. Mostly just weighing my options over taking off from saas. I can reasonably pull 300k which is more than enough money for me to live well.

Can I ask out of curiosity what your manager did that drove you crazy?  could you tell right away they sucked or did it take a while?  Asking as someone about to sign an offer letter leaving equity at a tiny start up to join a unicorn. however happiness > money.  i'm not worried but what were the signs?

Why are you leaving your current company?

My company is great I just don’t vibe with my manager just to clarify. It mostly came to pass over time as things changed and became less favorable. There are other factors that went into me deciding to leave but this post wasn’t to dive into why I’m leaving as much as the downsides of transitioning from SAAS to medical.

If there weren’t apparent red flags in the interview process I would probably move forward on your end It is always a good idea to try to check in with people doing the same job you will be so you can get a better inside look, not sure if you did that or not.

Yeah man, I have tried to think of every negative possible and couldn’t find something that told me not to do it. Just accepted yesterday, pretty stoked right now. Closing my own deals has always been the goal and now I get to do that.

Easy one for me with 20+ years medical experience, don't look back become a sponge. Also do self study on Anatomy and medical  terminology. Then work your face off brother.

The biggest downside I've heard from med device is work-life balance. I know a guy who is a top performer for Stryker. He said he has to get up in the middle of the night sometimes to go in for operations so he can try to sell his product in real-time.
