I’m in the cloud contact center technology space, having a hell of a time getting a second interview, and I think it’s because I am getting stuck. Instead, they do not like my response to the following question “what are your goals with this new role.” Any guidance would be appreciated.

Well, I have been a victim of layoffs at Talkdesk and other companies, so stability is essential. I will touch on that, growth, and helping others succeed.

Stability is essential but is not a goal in itself. “Making a personal contribution to the success of the company through building a solid pipeline and increasing revenue.” is a goal.

Avoiding layoffs is an (understandable) concern, but should go unspoken when it comes to your goals. They want to know who you are and what you are striving for - and how it will benefit them when they hire you.

I love this. I never thought about it this way how. I have seen what part of layoffs can do to someone and a family—making it a professional goal that my personal contributions will allow success so we can avoid layoffs at all costs.

Exactly. Talk about the value you would create for the company and it’s stakeholders.

It’s so hard to get out of that mindset, but always think about it from the company’s point of view. They’re going to want the best you have to offer - so you have the opportunity to share that. Concerns, uncertainty, fear - discuss with your family, and here, but not in an interview.

I like these, however putting a greater emphasis on growth for yourself and others in addition to making money is what gets results from interviews

Make sure your goals aren't completely self-centered. What's in it for them? Do your goals align with their goals? Think about what they are looking for in a candidate and state your goals in a way that positions you as "the one".

The best answer I guess would be talking about how much value you would add to them, wish you the best luck!

i feel like this is a really simple answer.

You tell them you wanted to join this company because you feel like they have a system in place to help you hit your number. and when you do that, you will be able to earn money to help you live the life you have always wanted, and also gain experience to make you an even better sales person.

This is one of those questions where you almost have to provide the 'stock answer' plus your own flavor to hit both sides.

Personally, I've always said "my goal is to drive revenue". That is the truth, and I would expand by articulating that this is the yardstick that AE's of course are measured upon, but also in how successful we are as individuals and also bringing success to the company collectively.

From customer side to company side to AE side:

-Revenue means we have provided our customers solutions that they find value in.
-Revenue means we have done our jobs and advised/guided customers through the buying journey, settling on our solution.
-Revenue means we have met our obligations to the company and our quotas.
-Revenue means we can take care of our families through overachieving on our quota.

I doubt you will get dinged if you can articulate why and how of bringing revenue.

A tad separately, right now the CCaaS space is in huge flux (I'm also in this space). The incumbents are getting rocked by stability issues, newcomers are starting to pick up steam, what was once a relatively staid and 'safe' market is instead getting to be the wild west. For a revenue team, half of what they're looking for (and what I looked for when hiring recently) is the ability for AE's in CCaaS to bring extreme clarity on how this space is changing and why X vendor can bring the best business value, when 3/4 of the vendors look the same.

As terrible as it is, I feel like the "stock answer" is the way to go for most interview questions. At least until you get to the point where your eventual supervisor speaks with you.

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.

Has massive growth ever led to mental breakdown? I have been hustling since 17 years old chasing to strive for success doing odd jobs and unintentionally ended up with Edtech K12 Sales as my first official sales job - A toxic culture with no employee respect eventually me to switch after 18 months. Since reps in Edtech are highly valued, had no option but to continue in Edtech sales. This time it was higher education segment, things looked good in the first few month but slowly it started adapting methodologies like the old Edtech since the management was changed. I decided to move out and switch to B2B SaaS. After 13 months of learning & success, my aspirations weren’t matching with the growth vision shared by my manager and ended up being desperate to switch. Got to a AM-Inside Sales role with a 50% hike. Guess what? It led to my mental break down since the culture is pathetic. In entire journey, all challenges never affected my performance but l am losing the spark to glow and hustle eventually. While I plan to switch, a token of guilt is still alive. The experiences have made me far better and strong as a BDR but blank about the next steps in my career. Thanks for reading. Do share your thoughts.
