I really feel bad for care sales folks

I ended up buying a car this weekend. and I have to say....idk how car sales folks do it.

I had probably about 20 ppl reach out to me once I started putting info on line (that was my 1st mistake)

But when I think about WHY i ended up going to the dealer and talking with the rep that I did it was really all luck.

The rep happened to call me at a good time and I had already decided I was going to go to that dealer.

I knew exactly what I wanted and he just had to show me what I wanted and boom. deal closed.

You ether have what I want or you dont, Idk how care sales reps get a constant pipeline of prospects.

seems insanely hard.

Also going through other ppls sales processes, as a salesperson, is just brutal. ๐Ÿ˜‚

shout out to all the savages killin it in the care sales game, how do you do it??

i know the feeling!! this is the first time in my life that I have been able to purchase a car BEFORE it dies.

Every other time if had to buy a car its because my current car is in the shop and cant even be moved.

this felt like a really nice life moment haha

I'm not sure how they really do it either. It's an item that, like you said, either people need or they don't. Not as much middle ground on that decision or scenario.

129 for the dealership in a month.

Probably one of the best podcast episodes ever -- even if you're not a "This America Life" fan. I re-listen at least once a year. Second only to this one: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/109/notes-on-camp

I worked in car sales for several years. Getting clients is 100% luck based on floor traffic. You have to be a closer because generating leads is basically non existent.

And like you said, more often than not it comes down to if you have the car the customer wants or not.

Sure youโ€™re selling them on the payment, extended warranty, etc. But most people have a rough expectation of where the payment should be for the car theyโ€™re coming to look at. And if they donโ€™t, they typically have bad credit and just want whatever you can get them approved for the loan on.

Add to that 10+ hour days 6 days a week, no work life balance, outside in shitty weather, and being 100% commission, idk why anyone would do it. But I know some people who genuinely enjoy it so good for them I guess.

I've always wondered about this as well. At the end of the day most people know what car they want and about what they should expect to pay. At the end of the day, when I go to buy a car, I'm just going to go to the place that has what I'm looking for. I guess if I was deciding between the same car at two different dealerships, my decision would come down to cost and if I liked the salesman.

The last time I bought a car I just handed them a print out from True car (I think thatโ€™s what I used) with the specs and price I wanted.

Just closed out on a new car as well (2022 Tacoma baby) but had a pretty good experience all in, very little pressure. I didn't do any info online, just went to a reputable dealership, kind of knew what I wanted, probably knew more about vehicle than the sales guy but he got the answers to the question I did have and showed me the car which was the main thing. My situation in purchasing was a bit unique and a bit of a headache for him and the dealership so I got him a bottle of Jameson for the trouble. I read into how they work a bit and it seems like (Toyota at least) reps get a percentage of profit as commission.
