I received an offer. It's lacking information discussed with recruiter and company...advice?

Hey Savages -

Happy first monday after Thanksgiving. Hopefully your hangover has been kicked by now!

Received my first offer today since being laid of November 17th.

Prefacing this, I am utilizing the "Negotiating a base salary/comp package" in the academy but have other questions I'm looking for clarity and direction on.

Job Title: Sales Manager reporting to Managing Director. Manufacturing company for B2B components in the medical space. There is no sales team and has primarily relied on 4-5 big key accounts to drive majority of their sales (think 80/20 rule).

Full autonomy on approaching growth how I see fit.

Current offer:

$75k base salary

1% commission on pre-determined customers

(I was originally told the OTE was $130k plus via commissions and company bonus, but there is no reference of that or any other bonus/commission in the offer)

Benefits:

Medical and Dental - (Company pays $80% of employee and children).

Short Term Disability

Long Term Disability

Life insurance - $25,000

401k plan - applicable after 3 months employment (100% match at 3% and 50% match on next 2%)

Nine paid holidays

Holidays - One week after one year of service plus 2 personal days per calendar year (pro-rated).

Questions I have:

  1. Can you elaborate more on the commission?
  2. Is there a company bonus?
  3. Am I capped?
  4. How is quota determined?
  5. PTO days?
  6. Can you elaborate on the "holidays - one week" part?
  7. Can we change my title to Sales Director? - disclaimer: I don't care either way, but feel director will help me down the line.

There are probably a bunch of questions I'm forgetting and WOULD LOVE any advice you may have.

Cheers!

Those are good questions. I guess the quota would be between $5-6m to hit that OTE. Can't say how reasonable that is without more info. And only you can determine if that base is what you're looking for.

Is there a draw (recoverable or non-recoverable) as you ramp up? Is the OTE a guarantee for Y1? What is the typical sales cycle and how fast do they think you'll be able to ramp up?

If you're looking for a higher base, I would also say something like "I was targeting positions with a base X% higher."

Regarding PTO - I assuming you're not in the US. 2 weeks is standard in the US (more in Europe). 1 week AFTER a year of service is pretty stingy IMO.

And remember - you can always keep looking even after you accept the job!

Good question on the draw. It was never mentioned.

I am actually in the US and the company is out of Europe with the managing director being German.

The base is fine if $130 OTE is realistic.

Thanks Pachacuti!

Congrats!

I'd dig into:" pre-determined customers". That seems like a red flag but I'm not in your industry. I'd be afraid they'd fine reasons not to pay me, but perhaps I'm just being paranoid.

This is a good stage to be paranoid in! It was a question I had as well. Account list would be another.

First congrats on the offer! Quick turnaround too!

Sorry not a manager so some of the questions I would add might not be as relevant so you can take this with a grain of salt.

When you met with the recruiter what was the range in base they gave you or is it just OTE?

I would ask what is the quota? Where is the team at this year too?

I would also ask for the actual Comp plan document they have

Thanks Kosta. They gave a range of $60-$80k in base. OTE up to $130k based on commissions and company bonus (recruiter's words, not mine).

My assumption would be your OTE is less than 130k. Since itโ€™s up to 130k and you are in the middle for salary.

Just my thoughts but would 100% get clarification on it

Keep us posted on response! Iโ€™m dying to know how they get to a 130 OTE with that base and those commission parametersโ€ฆ

Congrats that you got an offer. Definitely hash all questions out with the recruiter or hiring manager before you sign anything. Harder to change after you sign. Be upfront about your concerns. They obviously want you, so get what you need out of this to be happy

ok cool. i would see if they would be open to talking on the phone and working through the questions that way. its a faster way to get answers and you are able to kinda drill down on the recruiter for answers.

The commission structure needs to be spelled out before accepting anything.

I'd send a recap of everything discussed saying you didn't see these points in the offer (lost them) document and you wanted to insure you recived the correct offer letter since this pints were discussed and agreed to verbally!
