If Ads Became Perfectly Tailored To Your Personal Desires Would You Want To Ban Ads?

This post was inspired by Bandido's earlier post about our phones listening to us. Ads have become extremely targeted and if you don't turn off location services, microphone, use a private browser, etc you will get personalized Ads. As technology gets better these ads will only become more relevant. Thus, I'd love to hear fellow savages thoughts on if they like this or hate this. If you could buy personalized high-tech sunglasses that screened out all marketing ploys from your view would you use these sunglasses?

I don't believe ads will ever be perfectly tailored. They're actually pretty bad at predicting what you want if you think about it. For example, I just purchased a new bed. I am still getting ads for beds. Why would I buy one? I understand that they can see intent but beyond that the ads are useless after you make a purchase. Not sure how that's ever going to be resolved.

I agree they have room to improve, but technology grows exponentially and while I'm with you in the sense I have no clue how they will solve this problem I have a feeling they will find a way in the coming years. However, I hope I'm wrong and that the government puts privacy policies in place so big tech can't constantly hit us with more and more relevant ads

The way I see it, you can either opt into ads that might resonate, or you can opt in to random ads. There isn't a "no ads" option, so unless you have specific preferences on your privacy then may as well get ads for the new power washer you've been looking at/talking about anyway. Chances are you'll get the opportunity to save money too 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hahahaha appreciate the honesty Drendo. I use Brave browser which has saved me from seeing so many ads while I scroll the web on my laptop, but you're right ads are everywhere. Even if you're not seeing them on your laptop if you go outside to any major metropolitan area you will see ads everywhere

I hate the personalized ads because half the time it's based on a conversation that isn't relevant. For example, we have no kids, but a friend was over talking about babies and the next day I started getting ads for diapers.

Agreed. I turned off the microphone setting on every app that it wasn't absolutely necessary for so I don't have to deal with seeing ads based on every conversation I have.

Not completely what you are asking for but...I would rather be sold on something I didn't realize I need than something I know I need, I just haven't bought yet. Meaning, I'd rather have someone introduce me to a product/service than buy more of what I already know. It's for sure selfish because I want others to feel the same so I can sell more.

That makes sense. I was more so talking about the targeted ads you see on your phone/ computer, but it is nice when a salesperson takes the time to research you, reaches out, and actually offers a solution that might be of service!

For sure - sorry to derail. To more directly answer your question I turn off the microphone wherever I can as well. If I'm relaxing at the end of the day the last thing I want to see or hear are adds.
