The reason sales pays more is that is VERY easy for executives to understand the influence sales has on the growth of the organization. Its a 1x1 correlation, "I hired Johnny, and paid him $150k, Johnny generated $1.5 MM for our company" - most execs can do/like this math.   Marketing just doesn't work like that, its all about influence and attribution, most marketers spend 50%+ of their time trying to prove their value.  Sales, if you are good at it, is far more "sticky" and consistent of a career choice.

could not agree more. I've sold to marketing, have worked in orgs where marketing was good and bad. Attribution is their white whale.

If they have the choice between a campaign with C+ results and easy attribution vs A+ results with difficult attribution, they're either going to be forced to do the first or choose to do the first.

As much as I like to rag on marketing, it's tough to quantify a lot of what they do. That's a hugely underappreciated fact of sales. Being "just a number" makes it really easy to show your value.

That could never happen. Salary is commensurate with value created / rarity of skillset.

Sales is the most valuable skill in a company, which is why salespeople get paid so much. If marketing was more valuable, they would already get paid more.

This is it. Ever heard of “Fiverr”? Hundreds of thousands of freelance marketers looking to do a lot of work for little coin. Top 5% sales reps are hard to find.

So true. Do you think digital marketing will allow marketers to become much more "valuable" as it becomes easier to see how much marketers are bringing in as the data becomes more precise? (For example, when people purchase a product after going through a certain link) Obviously, marketing has different methods to advertise and certain tactics will never have as precise data like billboards, tv ads, etc, but it does seem digital marketing will make it much easier to track marketing metrics in the future.

Marketing attribution is really complicated @Chep . There's so many factors to consider. It's why a lot of companies like to do gated content. They can figure out what an MQL costs, how it converts, and what its CAC is.

But, how do you factor in branding? How much better do we do when we say we're calling from XYZ and the prospect knows what that is, what problem it solves, etc.

As much as we make fun of gong, they are one of the best marketing teams out there. Their brand name is synonomous with what they do and probably makes SDR's much more effective.

Anyone who votes 'yes' is getting booted from the group and condemned to an island that holds endless and pointless meetings.....correct?

I feel that every couple of years I consider going over to marketing. But then I remember when I did the first time, I was no longer customer facing and only spoke with like 5 people. I missed speaking with the customers.

Even if it paid better, I would miss the gratifying feeling you get in sales when you close a deal or get your prospect to say yes to what you want. You just don't get that in marketing.

I agree with @sahil that it's a false question. But if it paid more, you'd have to at least consider it.

I mean if I got paid more and didn't have to meet quota....I'd certainly have to consider it .....haha but naw, I don't think I'd be motivated by marketing.
