If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Do you agree?

Any American Gangster fans out there? One of my all time favourite movies and quotes.

Personally, I’m a big believer in the idea of “work hard in silence and let your success speak for you” but I was recently reminded that not everyone agrees, so please read my personal anecdote and share your thoughts.

This past weekend I bumped into some friends from high school who I haven’t seen in almost 10 years. They were in town for a basketball game, I saw a social media post about it, sent an fb message and the rest is history. We ended up getting together for drinks before their game and the whole “how’ve you been, where did life take you” conversation ensued.

As someone in their late 20s, the majority of my friends are either now just beginning to think about, or actively purchasing their first homes. One of my friends told me his long-time gf and he are considering tying the know and buying their first home, but together only qualified for a $700K mortgage, and though that’s their maximum spend the financial implications would be unaffordable, so realistically they couldn’t even afford that.

For the Americans reading, I should mention that in Canada, Vancouver and Toronto are the two most intense real estate markets, and 700K will get you a small condo, but certainly not the kind of home you’d want to raise a family in. The markets aren’t at the level of SF or NYC, but have now outstripped Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Miami, LA, in demand, cost-per-capita and buying power for locals.

Eventually, the conversation moved to my career and what sales has made possible, and by the end of the night I was fielding questions about why I don’t drive a Porsche or wear a Rolex.

As a self-proclaimed, die-hard “car guy” who used to drive a Corolla by choice, you’d never catch me dead in Gucci or Versace. If I buy expensive clothing (and I do) it’s always understated, and I prioritize quality over cosmetic appeal. I apply the same rationale to most of what I do. I live an extremely comfortable life by any measure, and I never hesitate to invest in my own well- being, but I never do so for attention. I go out of my way not to be noticed. I’m more focused on building an empire, and I’ll consider owning a Porsche or 3 when my income is 7 or 8 figures.

That’s my take anyway. But my friends were shocked that someone could want to be successful and not want to flaunt their success at the same time, and so I ask you savages. Who’s right, and who’s wrong? Is there a right and a wrong?

What’s your take on success/wealth and the exhibition of it?

If you like it, buy it. I wear everything from $10 dresses I bought at the thrift store to high end designer. I don't give a damn if people think my thrifted clothes are lame and I also don't give a damn if people think my designer items are tryhard. Not here to impress anyone else. I will say that I look better in a random fit I threw together for $50 than the hypebeasts that spend $2k but still don't understand the concept of tailoring or personal style, but that's because I'm extremely hot and perfect.

People have different priorities. Some people are ok walking around draped in designer with no cash in their wallet, some people will be multi-millionaires and still drive an old car and wear Wal Mart shirts. Who gives a fuck about what other people do with their money. If you're getting chirped by people you're hanging out with for the way you choose to spend your money, ask if they'd like to be your sugar daddy/mama and pay for your expenses. I bet they'll say no, and then you can tell them they can fuck off and mind their own biz then.

I'm confused. Are you saying your friends discussing that they want to purchase a $700k home is "flaunting"? I'm missing the connection

Nah, I’m saying they couldn’t afford more than $700k between them.

For him/them, the idea that someone could afford that or more (and therefore obviously has decent income/finances) - how come they’re not out rocking Yeezys and a different designer watch every day.

They can’t wrap their head around the idea that people want to have money, but not show it off.

Living in one of the wealthiest places in the US, if I tried to keep up with the old money around here, I'd be dodging debt collectors.    Some people fall into the trap of needing to keep up or impress, and it's just not of interest to me.

Do what you want.  Wear/buy what makes you happy.  Travel to places where you want to go, rather than what's in, or hot...basically, I'm on the same page you are.   Being financially sound rather than flashing cash is smart, IMO.

It’s far more important to know what you value and what matters to you, and then spend on that instead of spending on what you or friends think you should. Clothing and watches don’t matter to me at all and never really have. I dress fine, but very much would rather go on vacation or buy/trade for some rare beer or grill some huge tomahawks than wear a 200 dollar shirt or something.

Haha well said. I’d prioritize travel over everything else, but imho, if we’re talking dress shirts I’m happy to spend a couple hundred $.

Eton shirts are the gold standard, and they’ll last 1.5-2 years if you take care of them.

I’m bipolar AF. I’ll wear designer clothing and roll up in an electric smart car. 🤣 Renovated my modest house on our own because I’m too cheap to hire people. Threw down on a bucket list trip across the planet on a whim. And yet I shop all the BOGO’s at the grocery store.

I splurge within reason but I also wouldn’t call myself flashy. It’s about balance for me.

I used to be poor as shit so I think that keeps me in check.

I’m actually very similar, in mindset if not in the same behaviours, so it’s nice to hear I’m not alone.

I too came from nothing.  Dirt poor growing up, so I think that keeps me grounded.

I wouldn’t call that bipolar if there’s sound logic behind the motivations.

Unless you have a personal umbrella policy with high limits, you shouldn’t be flaunting anything. On a personal level, my friends that act rich are the ones secretly broke

Money talks, wealth whispers.

I like a bit of flash, but subtlety and quality (and ensuring one's future) are so much more important.

I feel like that shock of someone not wanting to flaunt it means that they either lack that affluence or are new money.

If you're familiar with Toronto, compare Bridle Path to Rosedale or Forest Hill. Tons of money around Post Rd., but so much is gaudy and flashy as hell.

my experience has been that people who are truly building wealth and have the money to spend are some of the most unassuming people you will meet.  i couldn't care less how someone spends their money.  it's their money, not mine.

your friends seem to think having wealth is synonymous with designer clothes and fancy cars.  i know people that have both and are broke AF.   building wealth doesn't even have to be about investments or a bank account, but it makes for a logical starting point.  success and wealth can also be measured in healthy, meaningful relationships and life experience.

I think it has been well documented here… but here are my .02

Financial stability should come first. Once you are well invested, insured, housed, etc etc, it’s appropriate to splurge and ball out a bit… if that’s your thing.

I could give a shit about fancy clothing and shoes. However, in my industry, looking the part is occasionally needed. So I have the nice suits, loafers, etc.

I personally do not look at my watch collection as something I do for attention or validation from other people. I just love watches. Do I wear a Rolex to business meetings? Yup. Do I wear a Rolex when I’m hunting and fishing. Yup.

If you are driving fancy car, or wearing the fancy watch for validation from others you are doing it for the wrong reason.

If being flashy makes you feel better. Then be flashy. If you want to be understated, be understated.

Richest guy I ever knew personally (NW ~100M) wore lame looking brown suits, he drove a generic sedan, and lived in the burbs. If you met him today you’d never know he was so wealthy. Great guy too. Gives to a lot of charities but keeps it quiet.
