Im Happy But I Might Leave : Career Update - UPDATE

so i shared about my career situation in the post linked. here is an update.

TLDR:

  • met with CEO, she didnt seemed to excited
  • Wouldnt give me comp numbers, even though that was the point
  • now im having second thoughts.
  • am i dumb?

I met with the "CEO" (they have a different title but we will roll with this for simplicity) of the division i would be joining. I set it up to talk about comp and some more value prop stuff about the product.

I have been upfront with them about my timing being hard with a big commission check coming and the fact that I have to stay to the end of my 1 year anniversary or i owe money.

SO i shared all the reasons I was excited about the opportunity and she agreed they were all the right reasons.

I then noticed she was actively doing dishes while we talked (on the phone). Which is totally not a problem in general, but it just made me feel like this conversation was not important. Im taking this SUPER seriously and i just didnt feel like she was.

Then when i told her i dont have an exact time line yet she said that we should reconnect in January.

I was taken back by this, because she was ready to end the call but I had not recieved any new information from her.

So i pressed to know more about the comp.

She did not give me numbers but said the OTE would "be the same as before but with a higher base"

I dont know what the OTE "from before" is.

this left a really bad taste in my mouth.

As i REALLY analyze this, I wonder if my reaction to this call is a sign i should stay put.

idk....only time will tell.

am i overthinking it?

this is SO true Fox. in my career the grass has NOT always been greener but ive been able to make every move work for me. Im in a spot where i dont NEED to make a move so im super aware of how green everyones grass is haha including my own.

NGL, the last time I didnโ€™t โ€œneedโ€ to make a move but did anyway, it was a terrible decision. If I put a positive spin on it I can make it sound like it wasnโ€™t a waste of two years of my lifeโ€ฆ but it was. The old me would say โ€œwhatโ€™s the worst that can happenโ€ but raging anxiety, physical health problems, and lower confidence in subsequent roles is a taste of my journey back to finding myself again after that hellacious time.

Definitely some Yellow Flags to say the least. What did the "CEO" when you said you didnt know the OTE "from before".

Knowing interviews should be trying to both ways, it seems like they dropped the ball. If you are happy with your current role, I know your boss isn't the best, but in general if you are happy. I would pretty much put it on the new company to prove its worth making the switch now

yeah it was one of those situations where she mentioned the OTE would be the same, kept talking and I never pushed her on it since i got the feeling i would not get an answer.

and yeah i do feel like its on them to really pull me away at this point.

If she said she'll be back in touch in January, I'd take her at her word on that. No sense in worrying about it until it's actionable. I'm sure you'll get a lot of your questions answered once the conversations start back up again.

yes this is true. i get SO anxious with this stuff. the call was at 11:30 that day and i really didnt get anything done before it i was so anxious.

So to drag it out even more kinda sucks haha

Well, sounds like you'll know more in January, and maybe you won't have to worry so much about that signing bonus.

I'd definitely have a weird taste in my mouth as well. It sounds like maybe the role isn't as well thought out as hoped, and there might also be something you're not aware of that will have them slowing down the process a bit. Is it possible that the project is being delayed or rethought?

this is true!

And no they keep telling me they are motivated to hire the RIGHT person. and if i could start now they would be down for that.

Its almost like she cant tell me numbers until there is a timeline/start date in mind. very odd

I guess Iโ€™d expect more enthusiasm if they were as motivated as they keep saying. To the point of being able to make an offer that isnโ€™t โ€œlike the formerโ€ which - they know you left, correct? So the pay wasnโ€™t enough to keep you last time. So youโ€™d think theyโ€™d realize that and have more in mind from the jump.

I get a sense that there is no urgency here based on what you mentioned. But I donโ€™t expect someone to be doing dishes while having a serious conversation but I wouldnโ€™t judge it for the moment. If I am still really interested, I will wait and connect back in Jan and see what they have in mind

yeah. And i wonder if this is some sort of game? like they know they cant match my current OTE they they are trying to be sneaky or something? idk its all very confusing and turns me off.

Have you talked to your same VP friend that invited you back to the old company (if I am following this correctly)?

Seems like she is trying to play ball as she doesnโ€™t want to pay you out for your lost comission at the current place - which sounds like it should be coming soon. I wouldnโ€™t worry about it because honestly, itโ€™s out of your control right now. Itโ€™s also a weird time in terms of financial planning, so you will prob get a more concrete answer in January when budgets are formalized. Hope it works out!

YES you are following correctly (impressive!).

I have not followed up with her. She does not have the ultimate say on this so i didnt want to bother her with it. But if she reaches out to me ill for sure let her know whats going on.

I would 1000% recommend reaching out! Even if itโ€™s something along the lines of โ€˜Hey just wanted to catch up and let you know how this call wentโ€™ as a courtesy.

I totally get the anxiety of not wanting to โ€˜botherโ€™ but if you think I about it this person is in your corner and Iโ€™m sure would appreciate being kept in the loop. If getting this job was a deal, she is your champion. You may scoop out more info you can use as leverage later

Having followed along a bit it goes to show we tend to make decisions or play out future scenarios a whole bunch, when in reality, things (like this call) come up that either have us make our minds completely or just complicate the decision further. I guess we never know till everythinggg plays out.
Stinks a bit that itโ€™s dragged out now but youโ€™ll know more then to make the proper decision!
