Imposter syndrome & how to overcome it

Hi all, this is my first post here and I'm looking for some mentorship from the community.

I've worked hard over the years to become great at sales, specifically cold calling with transactional sales. My dream has been to be able to lead a sales organization specifically because I love helping others learn and devop. At my current company I am a top producer and feel like I've peaked regarding growth and production.

At the same time I have a friend who is building out a sales organization and has asked me to help him build it from scratch. While this is the kind of position I've dreamt of having and feel like I have the skillset to achieve the goal of building this team and sales system out, I've had an inkling at the back of my mind that "there's always more to learn" or "maybe someone else would do it better".

I have the skills. I'm motivated to see this succeed. I want to work hard to make it happen but that voice at the back of my mind has been nagging me relentlessly.

What are your guys' thoughts on overcoming this mental barrier?

1. No one truly knows what the hell is going on.ย

2. There is always more to learn but you wonโ€™t know what that is unless you try it! Experience will help but trust your judgement.

good luck!!ย

Much appreciated! Wondering if this may be as simple as having a mentor to turn to for general questions that may arise?ย

Definitely recommend finding a mentor. Whether that is a current or former sales leader, or maybe someone you have networked with here or on LinkedIn.ย

I'd recommend it regardless of where you want your career to go as it's always helpful to have someone else to spring ideas, and possible job offers, off of.ย

Honestly. The best thing you can do is go for it. You'll get some scrapes, but if you are genuinely motivated to be successful you'll find a way.

You'll pretend or make some things up, you'll have to change your viewpoints, but eventually you'll realize you're now who you want to be.ย

The skills you'll pick up building from the ground are the kind of skills you won't learn where you are, go after it!ย

Life is short, trust in your abilities.ย

How did you overcome the mental barrier about cold calling and prospecting that everyone inevitably has when they first start out? At the time, you may have felt like you aren't sure of what to say or how to overcome objections but I bet after you ripped the bandaid you realized you actually can do it.ย

Same thing here! Don't go for a job you feel extremely unqualified for, but don't let 1 requirement on a job posting keep you from applying! Reach out, be honest and if the company thinks you're a fit and gives you an offer, internalize that and run with it!ย

Sometimes - you just jump.

Worst case, you fail, and you pick yourself up and start over. Best case, you find wild success and enjoy the ride. Either way, you're going to learn and grow and be better for the experience.

For me, the key here is the mentorship network. Make sure you have the right network in place to provide advise when you hit barriers in this new role, and the right support in place to both give you that push and provide a safety net if you start to fall.
