In what world is this even a question

WR fam I have missed you all, and Im quite certain none of you have missed me (except @CuriousFox, I appreciate you). I spent the last week hoping my house wouldn't burn down in a forest fire, but alas I am back.

And with my return to the internet I found this gem on LI (Sorry @WCK but I didnt feel like waiting for wednesday).

In what world should a VP of Marketing ever make the same or more than a VP of Sales?

My argument: A VP of Sales can exist and be successful without a VP of Marketing (or any marketing for that matter) but a VP of Marketing is basically useless without a strong sales team/leader. I can say this as fact because my company hasn't had a marketing team for the last 6 years and we are doing just fine.

In my opinion these VP's of Marketing are overpaid by about $218,814. So my ask to you all, is there a world where the VP of Marketing should even sniff the earnings of a VP of Sales?

Thats gonna be a no for me dog..... Your logic is sound. $200k for putting memes into emails is actual inflation at work.

I saw that number and thought of all the interns I could hire for $200k and even with their remedial skillset, produce more than the meme lords

A strong VPS with a weak VPM will still perform. A strong VPS without a VPM will still perform. A mediocre VPS with a strong VPM will still perform. A weak VPS with a strong VPM will still perform because the VPM will do anything to make sales like them.

Marketing is a function that is designed to make salespeople more successful. The nature of the job description literally makes you a sidekick to sales.

I’ve spent most of my career selling into marketing, so I’ve always thought that got a bad rap. But lately, I spend 90% of my time wondering what the hell they actually do.

Saw that and definitely voted VPS.

For many reasons already mentioned here.

I mean I'd take either salary though

Thankfully like 85% of people responded the same way. As for the other 15%, I pray for them.

That’s a weird way of saying “I make 200k for something I can’t prove worked, and I want more”

I'd accept it if that VP of marketing was the original OG of marketing at a conglomerate or just a huge company like Nike or Gymshark.

Yeah, anyone that says marketing VPs need to make more than Sales VPs should find me metrics for how they directly bring in the cash that pays their salary….I won’t hold my breath waiting for those because I’d suffocate to death

Devils advocate.

Is it harder to find a great VP of Marketing than a great VP of Sales? Maybe this is a supply question, not a value question.

The question is which role SHOULD be the highest paid. Not which is harder to find. I dont see a world where VP or Marketing should be paid more than the VP of sales.

Yeah but if its harder to find top tier VP of Marketing that would drive their price higher.

But fair on the phrasing of the question. Then definitely sales. "I can do your job but you can't do mine"

For sure. It going to be hard to find a top tier of either. See @poweredbycaffeine comment earlier on this thread talking about how they can complement and support each other based on their competency.

100%, this is a stupid question. The person that inevitably ends up bringing in the money for the VP of Marketing's salary is...yup, you guessed it, the VP of Sales. That's like a donkey expecting the farmer to give HIM a ride around the farm
