Inside Sales Role to Field AE

Hey Savages,

I have recently decided to start looking elsewhere, as I am seeing a lot of red flags at my current company, and even more issues a step up from the role im currently in (which I am on track to get promoted to). When looking at other jobs, I am focusing mostly on landing a field AE role, which has been my goal for some time. Any advice for someone interviewing into a Field role with no formal field experience, but an impressive record of hitting quota in terms of things that would make sense to position in the interview/questions to expect?

-Side note: I do have some outside sales experience because I have been allowed to take customers out/host lunches and dinners etc. but just haven't been in an actual field role that I can list on my resume.

Any advice appreciated!

I had been doing field sales in the past but not in tech so my inputs won't matter much as CPG functions very differently. But all the best and hope you nail it soon !

I went from inside sales to field rep a couple years back and in this climate, it probably won’t be super different. Most field reps are primarily WFH/virtual right now anyway. Unless my interview process was weird, no one ever asked me how I would react in an on-site meeting versus a zoom meeting. Your body cues and responses during the interview will speak for themselves in that aspect.

Yes, this is good. Most field people are struggling right now because they lack the virtual skills that come naturally to inside folks. Tout those and your numbers and you’ll be fine.

Sounds good! I know most people are strictly over zoom right now, but I want to get the title under my belt and a pay bump!

Oh absolutely. Be very outgoing and attentive in your interview, similar to how you would be onsite with a client, and speak to your strengths and experience. That will get you the farthest, in my opinion.
